Boys Hoop: Peabody holds on for victory over Fenwick

The Peabody boys basketball team defeated city rival Bishop Fenwick 66-61 on Monday evening, holding off a humongous fourth quarter from the visiting Crusaders, who outscored the Tanners 30-18 in the final eight minutes before succumbing.?Bishop Fenwick is a great team and they got very hot at the end of the game,” explained Peabody coach Thad Broughton. “We were very lucky to get out of here with a victory tonight.”The Tanners were led by Matt Correale, who scored a game-high 25 points. Brian Onessimo added 16 points for Peabody (4-8), which kept its tournament hopes alive. Fenwick got a team-high 13 points from Matt Costello.Trailing by 14 (56-42) with under six minutes to play, the Crusaders staged a rally, cutting the deficit to nine by the 4:30 mark. Devin Graham (12 points) would sink a three-pointer to cut the Tanners lead to six with 1:56 remaining before buckets from Correale and Bobby Sullivan allowed the hosts to escape.Peabody got nine points from Matt D?Amato while Fenwick got solid contributions from Rishad DeSilva and Josh Niconchuk, who scored nine points apiece, as well as Travis Maxner (7 points).Saugus 63, Georgetown 61At Saugus, the Sachems (7-7) pulled one out of the fire after trailing 23-9 at the end of the first quarter. Joe Bertrand was the big gun for Saugus, scoring 30 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Dan Cacciola and Dave Rowinsky each had eight points and Dan Bertrand got the job done in other ways, taking three charges.?This was such a great game,” Saugus coach Paul Moran said. “Georgetown is one of the better teams in Division 4. They?re just loaded. I give our kids credit. Our kids just fought.”Moran said Joe Bertrand set the tone, not just with his scoring, but with his hustling and rebounding.?The kids dug in deep. It was such a great high school game down the stretch,” Moran said.KIPP 51, Pioneer 41At Lynn, the Panthers are 4-1 overall, 4-0 in the North side of their division. Dayjuan Mckenzie had 10 points in his first start. He also had two steals and three rebounds. Dave Metelus (10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks); Dany Smith, 13 points and four rebounds off the bench; Desi D?Oleo, 8 points, six rebounds, seven steals off the bench and Marquis Purter, a strong game at point guard, all got the job done.Prep 81, Classical 51At Classical, the Eagles cruised behind 25 points from Max Burt as well as 15 points from Ben Judson. The Rams (8-6) got 10 points from Eli McConney and will look to get back on track today when they host Gloucester.Spellman 62, St. Mary?s 45At Brockton, the Spartans got 21 points from Anthony Silfa, but couldn?t keep up with the Cardinals, who led 36-24 at halftime before outscoring the visitors 18-8 in the third quarter. Spellman got a team-high 18 points from Ryan Roche as well as 15 from Rory Donovan. St. Mary?s (9-3) got solid contributions from Dennis Bailer and Lushima Zikianda, who each scored eight points.
