Girls Hoop: Lynnfield survives tenacious Newburyport

It?s certainly not the ideal way to earn a win, but the Lynnfield girls basketball team?s recent ability to come away on the better side of one-point games might come in handy come tourney time.For the second time in as many games, the Pioneers managed to survive in such circumstances, defeating visiting Newburyport 35-34.?A win is a win, I guess, but I?d much rather win by at least two points,” joked Lynnfield coach Bob Melillo. “We?ll take wins any way we can get them, especially once the state tournament begins.”Leading 32-26 entering the final quarter, the Pioneers found themselves ice cold, allowing the Clippers to come from behind.Emma Mancini (11 points) managed all three of the hosts? points, which proved just enough. Mancini was also a force on the glass for Lynnfield, pulling down 11 total rebounds.Katherine Lawless and Sam Filipe contributed nine points apiece for the Pioneers (11-2). Rachel Goodwin added four points for the victorsEnglish 59, Medford 30At Medford, the Bulldogs (13-0, 9-0 Northeastern Conference) led by 10 at the half, but outscored Medford 16-0 in the third quarter. Deidra Newson had a triple double with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals. Makayla Everette had eight points, 20 rebounds and 10 steals.Georgetown 59, Saugus 49At Georgetown, the Sachems (2-13) fell despite a game-high 31 points from Norma Waggett, who needs just 19 more to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Courtney Hollett added 10 points for Saugus. Waggett added 11 rebounds.Notre Dame 62, Tech 18At Tyngsboro, the Tigers (1-14) had solid play from Yerania Castro and Jamila Constantine (6 points). Jazmin Castro-Novas did a nice job rebounding.KIPP 60, Pioneer 29At Lynn, KIPP improved to 6-2, 5-0 in the league. Alex Huffman led the way with 22 points. Serena High and Pleilerkay Gaye had eight each with Gaye also getting 11 rebounds. Waleska Muriel had six points and Helen Maldonado, 12 rebounds.
