The Saugus-Swampscott hockey game was a battle but when the smoke finally cleared, it was Saugus coming away with a hard-fought 5-4 win at Kasabuski Rink.?This was definitely a back-and-forth affair,” Saugus coach Jeff Natalucci said. “We were happy to hang on and get the win.”The Sachems had a tough time stopping the line of Ryan Cresta, Ryan Donnelly and Mike Johnson. Cresta scored all four Swampscott goals and Donnelly and Johnson assisted on the first three (the first two came on the power play). Cresta?s fourth goal, 11:14 into the final period, was assisted by Donnelly and Emery Wollerscheid.Saugus (3-9) opened the scoring with a goal by Victor DeMatteo 27 seconds into the game, but Cresta tied it up. Nick Straticos scored his first of two with 10 seconds left in the period to put Saugus on top, 2-1 after one.The second period was much the same. Cresta tied the game 1:31 into the period, only to see Brendan Patterson score to put the Sachems back on top. Cresta scored again 10:52 into the middle period and it was a 3-3 game heading into the third.Straticos and Chris Anderson scored the next two goals to give Saugus a 5-3 lead. Cresta would get one back, but the Big Blue (3-11-1) couldn?t come up with the equalizer.?We had plenty of opportunities. We just couldn?t finish in the end,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said.Revere 7, Northeast 5At Malden, the Patriots battled through a penalty-filled game (12 by each team, four Northeast misconducts). Northeast jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but Rich Polignone tied it and Marco Mazzarelli scored to put Revere up, 2-1. Northeast tied it late in the first and took a 4-2 lead in the second period before Revere?s Mazzarelli intercepted a pass and scored to close the gap to 4-3.The Patriots went to town in the final period, scoring four goals — two by Cam Whalen and one each by Steve Noel and John Galatis. Whalen?s first goal came after he blocked a slap shot on a 5-on-3, got the puck and scored on a breakaway to tie the game, 4-4. Noel made it 5-4 and Galatis put one in the side corner for a 6-4 Revere lead. Whalen made it 7-4 (unassisted) before Northeast got one back.Revere is 2-11 (Revere would be 8-3-2 if it hadn?t had to forfeit games due to an ineligible player. The decision is being appealed).SWIMMINGTech 97, Minuteman 84At Lynn Tech, the Tigers (2-7) took eight of 12 first place finishes.
