English celebrates season at banquet

SAUGUS – The English High football team may have had a tough season overall in 2013, but the Bulldogs had plenty to celebrate in a Thanksgiving win over Classical in the 100th game of the rivalry, and with a senior class that produced some great moments and steady leadership.Many of those seniors won multiple awards. Among them were: Chris Tinkham, who was selected the best offensive and defensive lineman, defensive MVP and the Walter J. Boverini MVP Award winner.Danny Kane was named the unsung hero, and also received the $2,000 Paul Cavanagh Scholarship and was named the Tom Connelly Scholar-Athlete Award winner.Zach Lozzi received the Andy Fila Team Tough Award and a new award named for the late Bob Dwyer, who died last month, called the “Mr. Football Award.”Chris Lessard, who caught the game-winning pass that defeated Classical on Thanksgiving and then kicked the extra point, was given the Game Changer Award, Most Valuable Team Player Award, and Special Teams Award. He also received the Jay Olson scholarship.Other awards went to Danny Schumann, Gary Molea Most Improved Player; Schuyler Hogan, Bill Hall Coaches Award; Chayenne Sanchez, Paul Duchane Award; Alfredo Gonzalez, Scott Carpenter Award; Kyle O?Connor, best offensive player; Hugh Calise, best freshman varsity player; Daekwon Shepard, best sophomore varsity player; Lucas Harris, best junior varsity player.Northeastern Conference all-star recognition went to Lessard, Tinkham, O?Connor, Lozzi and Kane. Pop Warner Legacy awards went to Hogan, Schumann, Lozzi, Sanchez, Tinkham and Kane.Captains for the upcoming season include O?Connor, Victor Morales, Harris and Anthony Delacruz. Coach Peter Holey said more will be named at a later date.Calise was named the defensive MVP of the freshman team while Curtis Anderson was the offensive MVP. Frank Perry, Tyshawn Menter, Jonathan Kosmas and Matt Moorehouse received coaches awards.Sakada Chhay was the offensive MVP for the JV team and Jeremy Garcia was the defensive MVP. Kosmas was named MVP.
