LYNN – A judge ordered $5,000 cash bail for a city man who allegedly stabbed a man while trying to steal his laptop at a local laundromat.”(The alleged victim) pulled out a folding knife that he keeps on his person,” Lynn Police Officer William Stilwell wrote in a report. “(The defendant) then dropped the laptop and pulled out a knife of his own and stated, “are we really gonna be doing this?”John B. Banks, 49, of 50 Andrews St. #219, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and armed robbery; last Tuesday.He was arraigned on the charges last Wednesday where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf, according to court documents.Police reported responding to a Green Street address where the alleged victim told officers he had followed the suspect. The alleged victim told police he was using his laptop at Sunshine Laundry on Joyce Street when a man later identified as Banks approached, said “What’s up?” and grabbed the laptop.After the comparison of knives, Banks hit the alleged victim with his knife (with its blade collapsed) and then sliced the alleged victim’s right hand, according to police.The alleged victim ran outside for help and then followed the fleeing Banks while calling 911, police said.Police found Banks inside an apartment whose resident said a man had just entered. Police noted Banks matched the suspect description given by the alleged victim and had a bloody knife on him when arrested, according to court documents.The alleged victim positively identified Banks as the man who had stabbed him, police said.A prosecutor requested $25,000 cash bail, saying Banks had a three-page record with at least four convictions for similar offenses, had served time and also had drug convictions, according to court documents.Judge Antoinette Leoney ordered Banks held on $5,000 cash bail and to stay away from the alleged victim and Sunshine Laundry.Banks is scheduled to return to court Feb. 27.
