Girls hoop: English continues to ramble through Northeastern Conference

The English girls basketball team continues to steamroll its way through the Northeastern Conference with Beverly the latest victim, 78-46, at Beverly.The Panthers were in this one at the half, trailing by seven points, but the Bulldogs poured it on with a 43-point second half. Diondra Woumn (24 points) was a force in the paint while Catherine Stinson (19 points, 10 assists) and Deidra Newson (16 points, 10 rebound) both had a double-double.?Beverly really made us play tonight,” English coach Fred Hogan said. “They made us extend our man-to-man full court. We really had to pick up up with our defensive intensity ? Diondra was going to the basketball really strong. Our inside game was strong today.”KIPP 62, Salem Academy 16At Jewish Community Center in Marblehead, KIPP dominated this one with just about everyone getting into the scoring act. Alex Huffman led the way with 21 points and Maria Kamba was good for 11. Anaidys Uribe had six points. The KIPP starters were on the bench for the second half. KIPP is 8-2, 7-0 conference.Peabody 62, Classical 29At Peabody, the Tanners (11-4) shut out the Rams in the first quarter, as Peabody sprinted to a 19-0 at the end of the first.”The best part about this game was our ball movement,” Peabody coach Jane Heil said.Leading the way for Peabody was the duo of Carolyn Scacchi (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Olivia Summit (18 points, 12 rebounds). Michele McHugh played strong minutes for the Tanners as well. For Classical (10-9), Chenysse Hill (10 points) and Jaida Santos (8 points) were two bright spots for the Rams. Classical plays Everett Monday.Danvers 43, Swampscott 38At Swampscott, the Big Blue (5-11) got off to a slow start and never recovered. Danvers led 32-10 at the half and then dug in to hold off a surging Swampscott in the second half. Hannah Llewellyn had 11 points for Danvers and Ashley Arnoldy, 10. Freshman Jamie Caponigro led the way for Swampscott with 19 points (9-for-9 from the line). Jackie Walsh had 10 points. Danvers, which stopped a three-game losing streak with the win, is 9-8.Fenwick 68, Matignon 49At Fenwick, After a sluggish first quarter that saw the two teams tied at 9-9, the 9-7 Crusaders turned it on from thereon out to win going way.”We came out flat,” said coach Adam DeBaggis. “After that, we came out as we should have.”Colleen Corcoran (18), Gianna Pizzano (13) and Kate Lipka (12) scored in double figures for Fenwick.Revere 39, Salem 34At Salem, the score was tied at 34 with about a minute to go, but the Patariots (7-9) pulled it out thanks in part to clutch free-throw shooting (5-for-6 in the fourth quarter, 11-for-12 overall). Tiphani Harris had 14 points along with 15 rebounds and Jen Fajardo had nine points and eight rebounds. The Witches had three players with six points.Greater Lowell 74, Tech 18At Greater Lowell, the Tigers (1-18) had a strong team effort despite the result.”We played very hard and I am pleased with the girls effort tonight,” Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler said.Lila Nieves had a strong performance on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.Lynnfield 56, Malden 22At Malden, the Pioneers exposed Malden’s zone defense, as Lynnfield hit a season-high nine three-pointers. Emma Mancini and Katherine Lawless both scored 11 points each for the Pioneers. Kelly Look scored five points off the bench for Lynnfield (15-3).Winthrop 49, Fontbonne 36At Winthrop, the Vikings (13-2) jumped out to an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 25-17 lead into halftime. Winthrop led 40-33 with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter, when Theresa Jones hit a big three-pointer to put Fontbonne away. Leading the way for Winthrop was Kristin Siscamanis (12 points, 6 rebounds), Ashelyne Babb (9 points, 7 rebounds) and Jen Adamson (5 points, 7 rebounds). Winthrop next plays Marblehead Sunday.
