The Revere High hockey team would have preferred a win over a 5-5 tie against Somerville Wednesday, but the Patriots aren?t complaining given the good news they received earlier in the day.Revere High athletic director Shaun Hart, coach Joe Ciccarello and Revere High principal Lourenco Garcia appeared before the MIAA board of directors on Monday to appeal a decision made earlier in the season that resulted in the Patriots having to forfeit six wins and two ties that occurred in their first 11 games as a result of having an ineligible player. The player was a fifth-year senior who had not played as a freshman.Hart said the school became aware of the player?s ineligibility on Jan. 17 and immediately reported it. An initial appeal of the forfeits was denied, but Revere wrote another letter to the board of directors and the board decided to convene a meeting to hear it.Hart said the MIAA and the board of directors take some heat over issues at times, but he said they were great in dealing with the appeal. He said the board wasn?t scheduled to meet again until Feb. 26, which would have been too late given the tournament cutoff date. He said members came in for an unscheduled meeting and heard the appeal.?They were amazingly timely,” Hart said, adding they realized how important it was to the Revere players.? Overall I think the board of directors had the best interest of the kids at heart,” Hart said.It wasn?t clear as of last night whether Revere would have its record restored, or whether it would be allowed to go into the state tournament as the bottom seed, which is how a situation was handled in the fall regarding a soccer team.As for the Somerville game, the Patriots trailed 3-1 at one point and 4-2, but salvaged the 5-5 tie when Cam Whalen scored with 38 seconds left. Marco Mazzarelli, Richie Polignone, Steve Noel and Joe Ristino had the other goals.Revere is either 4-13-1 or 10-5-3 depending on how the record issue is dealt with, but the Patriots are in the tournament.Marblehead 5, Danvers 1At Salem State?s Rockett Arena, the Magicians?
