SAUGUS – The Theatre Company of Saugus will be performing “a show within a show” for their next performance in a Broadway cult favorite called [title of show].Director Nicholas Meunier said the concept is difficult to describe, but well worth it to witness the four-part harmony and wit. In the original, writers Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell, along with their two female friends, play themselves as they write and produce a show for a music festival, which eventually progresses to a Broadway spot and eventually a YouTube channel. The theater process plays out in front of the audience, from the beginning line of “Untitled Opening Number,” to 90 minutes later when the cast sings “This is the last line of our show.”Meunier said he?s hoping that the irreverence of the show will draw a younger crowd, especially with the location of the show, playing Feb. 28 through March 9 at Saugus High School, since a pipe burst at the theater company?s usual performance site at the East Saugus United Methodist Church.Meunier said since [title of show] is the kind of show where “if you know it, you love it,” he hopes to take advantage of the location change to market it to wider audience. “For anyone who loves theater, or any sort of performing arts, it touches you,” said Meunier, who admitted the show has made him laugh and cry.One of the themes of the show that Meunier said has really touched him is the message of creativity. With songs like “Die, Vampire, Die,” the characters face their own insecurities and fears of their show being good enough to bring their vision to light.Meunier said he?s kept the same spirit of the show by collaborating with the four actors, who are Bobby Imperato of Saugus playing Hunter, Stephen D?Amico of Boston playing Jeff, Andrea Lyons of Arlington playing Heidi and Rebecca Schneebaum of Boston playing Susan.?Every rehearsal has been a discovery of what we wanted to do,” said Meunier. “We tried to always be brainstorming.”
