When Malden Catholic quarterback Brendan Tobey of Lynn broke his collarbone four games into the football season his junior year, he was understandably disappointed.?I was pretty bummed out, but I told myself I still have my senior year. I still have a chance to have a good season and have colleges look at me,” he said. Then lightning struck again, only this time it was three games into his senior year. He took a hit, and the opposing player landed on his right shoulder, driving his left shoulder into the ground. He knew as he walked off the field to the bench that it was his collarbone. Same side, different year.?It was tough for me to get through,” Tobey said. “I was down in the dumps when I got hurt the second time.”Tobey missed the final eight games of his high school career, but not the opportunity to play at the college level. Assumption College in Worcester had seen him play and when it came time to make a college decision for next year, Assumption still wanted him. Tobey signed his National Letter of Intent early this month.Tobey has recovered from the injury and now he?s hoping to earn a spot on the Malden Catholic baseball team this spring. He played the last two years on the junior varsity. Tobey came up through Wyoma Little League as a centerfielder, but he says at the high school level, he?s played outfield and some third base. Tobey also played for East Lynn Pop Warner.Tobey has two older siblings. His brother, Greg, went to Bishop Fenwick as did his sister, Lauren. Lauren Tobey had a stellar softball career for the Crusaders before going on to play at Curry College. She?s currently working for Northeast ARC.Tobey said he?s hoping to major in either business or accounting. His parents, Mary Ellen and Rick Tobey, were both on hand at Malden Catholic when he signed his letter of intent.Taylor Cross of Saugus/The Rivers School is a sophomore defenseman on the Norwich University women?s hockey team.
