Roundup: English boys hoop defeats Revere

The English boys basketball team is still looking to put together four solid quarters, but the slow start didn’t seem to matter much in a 91-66 win over Revere Friday at Revere.”We were down 20-11 after one quarter,” English coach Mike Carr said. “We’ve come out flat, which we’ve done a bunch of times this year, but by halftime we started to play defense.”The Bulldogs still trailed by two at the half, but once they got rolling, it was lights out for Revere. English scored 31 points in the third quarter and 27 in the fourth.Johnny Hilaire was the game-changer for English, scoring 32 points, most of them in the second half.next one frosh an sophomore.”Johnny Hilaire was outstanding tonight,” Carr said. “Every game, his point totals are going up. He playing with a different intensity … He always gets the tough rebound.”Revere coach Adam Rizzo agreed.”They pounded it into John Hilaire. Even when we played good defense on him, he got it in. Even when he missed he was getting his own rebounds,” Rizzo said.Freddie Hogan had 17 points for the Bulldogs and Erick Rosario had 15. Ravi Ryland had 19 points and Mike Ciambelli,17 points, for Revere (7-12). Jason Seigal had 10.English is 13-6 overall, 13-4 in the Northeaster Conference Large. The Bulldogs plays St. John’s Prep Sunday in the IAABO Tournament at Central Catholic. Revere is 7-12.Swampscott 79, Winthrop 46At Winthrop, the Big Blue (4-13) qualified for the state tournament under the Sullivan rule. Winthrop made a run in the second half, cutting a 12-point lead to eight, but Swampscott responded with a 27-0 run the carried into the fourth quarter.Andre Reeves and Joey Ragusa were the big guns for the Big Blue, scoring 18 points each. Reeves, a freshman guard, scored 17 of his 18 in the second half and Ragusa had six assists and three steals to go with his18. Senior center Peter Wright had 12 points and nine rebounds.Hamilton-Wenham 53, Saugus 47At Saugus, the Sachems led 32-25 at the break, but had trouble executing in the second half where they were outscored 28-15. Joe Bertran had 27 points and 12 rebounds and Lamarr Jones had six points and 10 rebounds. Saugus is 9-9 and needs one win out of its next two games to qualify for the tournament. The Sachems play Newburyport and Pentucket for their final two games. Hamilton-Wenham is 15-2.Danvers 61, Marblehead 40At Danvers, the Falcons (16-2) came out on fire, hitting a couple of threes early on to get things going. Marblehead was attacking the basket and getting to the line, but not hitting the free throws. Danvers got the lead to 17-8 and Marblehead couldn’t recover.Mark McCarthy had 18 points on six threes for Danvers and Kieran Beck had 14 points and seven rebounds. Devan Harris was also tough with 15 points and eight rebounds. Marblehead had a good game offensively from Spencer Craig. The Magicians are 9-9, 7-7 in the Northeastern Conference Small. They’re in the tournament based on a second-place finish in the conference.Gr. Lawrence 69, Tech 58At Andover, the Tigers got a game-high 30 points from Odell Tiggs in a loss to the host-Reggies who led 25-23 at halftime before pulling away. The Tigers (2-13) got 12 points from Michael Anaya as well as nine points from Shaiheem Mazil while the hosts were led by Alexis Estrella, who finished with 22 points. Tech plays Salem on Sunday in the Salem Tournament.Beverly 65, Peabody 60At Peabody, the Panthers (13-7) snuck by the Tanners behind the efforts of Nick Cross (17 points) and Josh Carins (14 points). Peabody (7-12) was led by Matt Correale, who finished with 10 points while Brendan Morrison contributed eight points and nine rebounds in the loss. The Tanners travel to Ipswich on Monday while Beverly hosts Revere this afternoon (3).Spellman 66, Fenwick 60At Brockton, the Crusaders tied the score with 2:30 remaining in the game on a three-pointer from Dominic Luoni (team-high 23 points) before succumbing to the host-Cardinals.
