Roundup: Wrestlers grapple with destiny

Both the Lynnfield and St. John?s Prep wrestling teams continued their season-long dominance with championship performances at their respective division meets.At the Division 3 North Sectionals in Danvers, the Pioneers totaled 192 points, to finish well ahead of Wakefield (178) and the host Falcons (161).Eric Kerr (126) was the lone first place winner for Lynnfield, who relied on a plethora of runner-up finishes to take the crown.Joe Morse (106), Scott McGrath (120), Joey Wise (152) and Tom Arseneault all earned second place in their respective classes. The Pioneers got third-place performances from Max Wyman (132), Dominic Monzione (145) and Brandon Troisi (195).Other notable finishes for the victors came from Max Robert (170) and Paul Foukas (285), who both finished in sixth position.The Eagles took home top honors at the Division 1 tournament, behind the efforts of Jared Costa (145), who secured the Most Falls Award with four pins on the afternoon. Costa?s brother, Hunter (126), and heavyweight Ian Butterbrodt (220) also were crowned champions, helping outpace second-place Chelmsford. The Prep got two second-place finishes from Michael Dik (120) and Fred Colberg (152) as well as a third-place performance from Ben Kincaid at 160. The trio of Malcolm Mitchell (106), Jack Anderson (138) and Frank Soucy (195) each finished fourth.Rounding out the Eagles? notable performances were fifth-place finishers Solomon White (170), Spencer Jenkins (182), Jay Carnevale (285) and John McNaught (113).BOYS BASKETBALLBeverly 60, Revere 55At Beverly, the Patriots came up short in their final game. Revere (7-13) was led by Mike Ciambelli (12 points) and Tommy Chea (11). The Panthers (14-7) got a game-high 18 points from Nick Cross as well as 13 points from John Berchoff.Salem 53, Tech 50At Salem, the Tigers (2-16) were led by Michael Anaya (19 points), Odell Tiggs (12) and Shaiheem Mazil (12).GIRLS BASKETBALLBeverly 58, Revere 56At Beverly, the Panthers prevailed behind a game-high 26 points from Bridget Keaton. Beverly (8-10) got strong games from Natalie Nellinger (11 points), Ashley Keaton (10) and Melissa Lubas (8 rebounds). The Patriots were led by Jennifer Fajardo (20 points) while Tiphani Harris (11) and Cassandra Dibella (10) also reached double-figures. The Panthers play Fenwick today (5) in the Hamilton-Wenham tournament.Peabody 76, Chelmsford 46At the Woburn Tournament, the Tanners put together their finest performance of the season, with three players scoring 15-plus points. Sara Hosman (20 points, 5 assists, 3 steals), Olivia Summit (19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists) and Carolyn Scacchi (15 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists) each had monster games.Peabody (14-4), who also got two rare three-pointers from Amanda Matthews (7 points), plays Woburn for the tournament championship this afternoon (3).In other girls basketball news, Bishop Fenwick?s game against Gloucester was postponed due to conflicting weather conditions and rescheduled for this Thursday (7) at Peabody.BOYS TRACKDivision 4 State MeetThe Swampscott boys finished ninth overall at Sunday?s Division 4 State meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. Matt Mahoney had an outstanding afternoon, qualifying for the All-State meet during his 9:20.44 in the 2-mile, which saw him lap all but two runners on the way to a dominant victory.The Big Blue also got solid showings from Noah Conti, who finished third in the 600m (1:23.96) to qualify for All-States, and Justin Chasse, who placed fourth in the shot put (48-1 1/4).GYMNASTICSThe Bishop Fenwick gymnastics team saw Taylor Tattan win the beam (4.3, qualifying for New England Regionals) and get an 8.7 on floor. Abby Regnier qualified on uneven bars (8.45).
