The Bishop Fenwick girls basketball team won the first annual Patton Tournament Tuesday with a 43-37 victory over host Hamilton-Wenham.Both teams pressed a lot and the result was a bounty of fouls and turnovers on both sides. The Crusaders (12-8) could only muster four points in the second quarter and at the half, trailed 16-15. Fenwick didn?t really get going until the fourth quarter when a couple of players stepped up including Kate Lipka, who had a huge three, Kayla Porcaro, two big free throws and Colleen Corcoran, who made a layup, got fouled and hit the free throw.Corcoran led the Crusaders with 12 points, Lipka had nine and Gianna Pizzano, eight. Corcoran was named the tournament MVP and Lipka and Pizzano were named to the all-tournament team.In other girls basketball action, Marblehead defeated Mystic Valley in the Brad Sheridan Tournament in Marblehead. The other game between Dracut and Winchester was not played because Dracut did not want to make the trip due to the weather. There will be no championship named, but there will be two girls games played today (matchups to be determined).BOYS BASKETBALLMarblehead 56, Manchester-Essex 48 (OT)At the Brad Sheridan Tournament in Marblehead, the Magicians scored with 34 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 46-46. Manchester-Essex couldn?t do anything when it got the ball back and Marblehead couldn?t capitalize when it regained possession with four seconds left, sending the game into overtime.Manchester-Essex scored first and the Magicians, after missing a couple of layups, got a big three-point play from Matt Millett (12 points). Will Millett (16 points) had six in overtime to help the Magicians, who had trailed by 10 at the half, pull away. Marblehead (10-9) will play Concord-Carlisle (a winner over Malden Catholic) tonight in the final at 8 p.m. Malden Catholic will play Manchester-Essex at 6 p.m.GIRLS HOCKEYActon-Boxborough 4, St. Mary?s 1At Hingham, Acton-Boxborough took a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the game on goals by Annie Messuri (1 minute in) and Meghan Barrett. Neither team could get on the board in the second period, but the Spartans cut the lead in half early in the final period on a goal by Sam Callahan (Katie Terban, Ashley Wojewodzic assists).St. Mary?s was in the hunt until Barrett struck again for Acton-Boxborough with 2:16 left in the game. The Spartans had to go for broke and pull the goalie, but Acton-Boxborough?s Olivia O?Keefe scored an empty net goal with 18 seconds left to put the game away.?I was disappointed,” St. Mary?s coach Frank Pagliuca said. “You can?t give up two goals in the first four minutes of the game. We came out flat.”Pagliuca said his team picked it up in the second period and had several good scoring opportunities but nothing found the net. The Spartans (9-6-5) play Hingham Thursday at 8 p.m.In other girls hockey action, Melrose defeated Peabody, 5-1, at Medford; and Marblehead defeated Matignon, 13-3, behind three goals and an assist from Brittany Smith. Aly Hopkins was in net.BOYS HOCKEYMarshfield 7, Peabody 1At McVann-O?Keefe Rink, the Tanners wrapped up the season with a 5-13-2 record. There was a bright spot in the loss, however. Bobby Caproni had the assist. In other boys hockey action, Saugus advanced to the final of the Newburyport Classic Tournament after winning 1-0 by forfeit over Lincoln-Sudbury. Saugus coach Jeff Natalucci said Lincoln-Sudbury had decided not to play the game because of the weather and took the forfeit.
