Hockey: St. Mary’s girls picking up steam

The St. Mary’s girls hockey team picked up some steam heading into the state tournament with a 3-1 win over Winchester Friday at Connery Rink.”We started off slow, but we got strong offensively in the second period,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said. “Winchester is a good team. They’re going to be a tough out in Division 2.”Kate Terban had a nice night for the Spartans. After a scoreless first period, she broke the ice with a goal early in the second period. Maggie Flaherty had the assist. The Spartans would add two more that eriod, one from Tatiana Doucette (Terban and Sam Callahan assists) and the other from Ashley Wojewodzic. Terban assisted on that one as well for a one-goal, two assist night. Winchester’s Tori Carson scored early in the third period to spoil goalie Lauren Skinnion’s shutout.It was senior night for St. Mary’s. Doucette, who will be playing at Southern Maine next winter, was honored along with Skinnion, Jacqueline Murphy and Amanda Donahoe.BOYS HOCKEYFenwick 6, Lowell Cath.4Chris Napolitan had a pair of goals and an assist and freshman Jim Moore chipped in with a goal and an assist to lead the Crusaders to a win.”We played great tonight,” Fenwick coach Dan Lynch said, noting that when the teams met the first time the game wasn’t even close.Fenwick finishes the regular seasona 3-17. Lynch said he had 15 freshmen and sophomore this year, which bodes well for next year.Revere 8, Everett 1At Cronin Rink, the Patriots closed out the regular season with a productive night offensively. John Galatis has two goals and sophomore Kevin Chiles, one, lead the attack. Revere led 2-0 after one period and 5-0 after two. Senior Adam Comeau was in net.Revere will head into the Division 2 North tournament as the last seed with a 5-4-1 record. The Patriots had to forfeit six wins and two ties due to an ineligible player, but the MIAA approved an appeal and allowed them in the tournament as the bottom seed.. Their record without the forfeits would have been 11-6-3.In other boys hockey action. St. John’s Prep defeated Wakefield, 10-0, at Stoneham Rink.
