St. John?s Prep didn?t win the team Division One wrestling team State Championship Saturday — that honor went to Springfield Central once again — but long-time coach Manny Costa carried away a lifetime of memories thanks to his sons, Jared and Hunter.Jared was one of two Eagles to claim an individual State title, taking the 145-pound crown via pin after trailing, 3-2. He is now 57-1 on the season.?He has waited his whole life for that match. He has lived his whole life for SJP wrestling. As a dad/coach it was an incredible feeling being on the mat watching my son win a state title,” Costa said.Ian Butterbrodt became a two-time State champion at 220 pounds in a dominant performance and improved to 55-0 by winning two decisions (15-0 and 16-0) before claiming the title via pin in 2:13.?He worked hard all year preparing to be a champion at off-season practice tournaments and weight training,” said Costa, who now has coached 24 State champions in his 24-year career.Sophomore Hunter Costa placed second at 126 pounds, falling in the title match, 9-5, after pinning the top seed in the semifinals.?It was exciting having both sons in the state final together getting to share the experience,” said Coach Costa.St. John?s other placers were: Michael Dik (120, 5th), Fred Colberg (152, 5th) and Ben Kincaid (160, 6th).St. John?s finished second as a team with 126 points, well off the pace set by Central (161). The Eagles were 37-4 overall during the season and also placed second in the state Dual Meet Tournament. Next up is this weekend?s All-State Tournament.DIVISION THREEThe Lynnfield wrestling team finished second overall and had two competitors crowned as state champions at the Division 3 State Tournament on Sunday morning in Foxborough.The Pioneers tandem of Eric Kerr (126) and Tom Arseneault (220) both finished at the top of their respective weight classes and will head to the All-State tournament (Divisions 1 & 2) on Saturday in Lowell.Lynnfield had a pair of fourth place finishes in Joe Morse (106) and Joey Wise (152), both of whom will head to Lowell. Also placing in the top 10 were Max Whyman (132) and Dominic Monzione (145), who both finished eighth.Swampscott/Marblehead?s senior captain and 182-pounder Ali Atallah won one match before bowing in the quarterfinals and finished 1-2 on the weekend. Freshman Stephen Hopkins, the first freshman in program history to qualify for the tournament, lost both of his matches at 106 pounds.
