February 26, 2014 by Rich Tenorio

Chad Nelson scored 25 points as the Swampscott High boys basketball team ousted Lynnfield, 65-60, in Division 3 North first-round play at Lynnfield on Tuesday.?Obviously we took advantage of our size with Chad,” Big Blue coach Dave Born said. “They kids prepared hard. They prepared well.”No. 12 Swampscott (5-12) advanced to the quarterfinals Saturday against Arlington Catholic at Woburn. The Big Blue lost to the Cougars 60-47 on Dec. 27.?We attacked inside and executed when we had to against their man-to-man defense,” Born said of his team?s effort yesterday against the No. 5 Pioneers (11-10).Andre Reeves and Joey Ragusa added 15 and 12 points, respectively, for Swampscott. The Big Blue led 30-22 at halftime. Nelson had 14 rebounds and Reeves had 10. Point guard Ragusa had “a strong floor game,” his coach said.Fenwick 73, M. Valley 61At Mystic Valley, Matt Costello led the way with 23 points, nine rebounds and four steals as the 10th-seeded Crusaders (11-10) advanced to the Division 4 North quarterfinals. They will play at No. 2 Hamilton-Wenham Friday (7).After leading for most of the first half, the Eagles closed the second quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 31-30 edge at the break. However, Fenwick came back out with a 7-0 run to open the third quarter and coasted from there.?It was a pretty good win,” said Fenwick coach John Preziosa. “Once we retook the lead we never gave it back. We gave up too many points, but I liked our intensity.”Fenwick was playing in its first tournament game in five seasons.Dom Luoni had 18 for Fenwick, and Travis Maxner 11 with seven rebounds. John Olivera hit some big baskets late in the second half, Preziosa said. For Mystic Valley, Jean Celestin was the high man with 25 points.N. Andover 68, Beverly 57At Beverly, the Panthers (15-8) bowed out in Division 2 North thanks to a 14-0 run by the Scarlet Knights after Beverly had clawed back from a 14-point first half deficit to tie the game at 52 with 3:17 left.?But we lost the game well before that,” said Beverly?s Scott Lewis. “We missed a lot of free throws and easy layups.”Down 14 early, Beverly had whittled the lead down to six and then took a brief lead in the third quarter.?It was back and forth from there until the three-minute mark,” said Lewis. “After that, we had three straight turnovers.”Jon Berchoff led Beverly with 23 points.GIRLS BASKETBALLN?port 54, M?head 51 (2OT)At Newburyport in a Division 3 North first-rounder the Clippers twice hit three-pointers with time running out to send the game into the two overtimes, and then got a key steal with 30 seconds to go and converted it into a layup that put the game out of reach.Marblehead (12-9) got 12 points and seven rebounds from McKenna Barrett, along with 10 points from Mia Bongiorno (along with three steals) and nine points and 12 rebounds from freshman Lindsay Walker.HOCKEYMasco 5, Revere 1At Stoneham, the Patriots saw their season come to an end but they didn?t go down without a fight. After spotting Masco a 3-0 lead, Steve Noel scored for Revere to cut the deficit to 3-1.Revere coach Joe Ciccarello said the 5-1 score was not indicative of how well his team played. The Patriots end the season with a 5-15-1 record that would have been 11-7-3 had they not forfeited six wins and two ties because of an ineligible player.?We went from two wins last year to 11 wins this year,” Ciccarello said. “It was an incredible turnaround.”Ciccarello said his team showed incredible resiliency in dealing with the forfeit situation. Also, Marblehead defeated Haverhill, 4-0, in D2 North first round play at Chelmsford. The Magicians will face North Reading in the quarterfinals Friday at Stoneham (5).
