The Salem boys basketball team opened the Division 2 North MIAA state tournament as the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals against Brighton, the No. 6 seed. Salem needed an overtime to come out on top 60-58 at Salem Friday night.Salem was down 54-52 late in the fourth quarter. Salem’s Jamie Dominguez hit a jumper from the foul line that tied the game 54-54 with 20 seconds left in the fourth. The Witches got a defensive stop to push the game into overtime. Rashad Keyes opened overtime with a three-pointer to put Salem up 57-54. Salem led 57-56 with under a minute left, when Dominguez scored off an offensive a rebound and was fouled on the basket. Dominguez made the free throw to put the Witches up 60-56.”This was a hard fought game by both teams,” Salem coach Tom Doyle said. “We were down virtually the entire game. The boys hung in there and kept chipping away until we took over late.”The Witches were down as many as 13 in the third quarter, but Salem’s David Kazadi had a huge block to steal the momentum from Brighton.”I feel that was a pivotal play in the game,” Doyle said. “We needed something to get us going in the second half, and that was the something we were looking for.”Leading the way for Salem was the trio of Keyes (21 points), Kazadi (12 points, 15 rebounds) and Dominguez (17 points). Salem will host Belmont, the No. 6 seed Monday night in the Division 2 North semifinals.St. John’s 74, Lowell 67At St. John’s, St. John’s did not skip a beat coming off its bye. The No. 1 seed in the Division 1 North quarterfinals against ninth seeded Lowell. The Eagles were tied 21-21 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Lowell 21-11 in the second to take a 42-32 lead into the half.”It was a back and forth game throughout, but our ability to extend to a double digit lead in the second quarter proved to be the difference,” St. John’s coach John Dullea said.The Eagles were led by the duo of Ben Judson (20 points) and Mike Visson (13 points, 9 rebounds). St. John’s has now advanced to the Division 1 North semifinals, and is matched up against fourth seeded Central Catholic on a date to be determined.Hamilton Wenham 61, Fenwick 52At Hamilton Wenham, the 10th-seeded Crusaders were tied 25-25 with Hamilton; the No. 2 seed at the end of the first half of the Division 4 North quarterfinals. Fenwick was outscored 26-14 in the third quarter, and trailed 51-39 at the end of three.”We just had no answer in the third,” Fenwick coach John Preziosa said. “Our kids never quit and hung tough tonight. I tip my hat to Hamilton, they deserved to win tonight.”Leading the way for Fenwick was seniors Matt Costello (20 points) and Dominick Luoni (14 points). The Crusaders finished the season 11-11.BOYS HOCKEYLincoln-Sudbury 2, Winthrop 1At Woburn, the fifth seeded Vikings were on their heals in the early stages of the Division 2 North quarterfinals against fourth seeded Lincoln Sudbury. Winthrop surrendered a goal three minutes into the first period, and trailed 1-0 at the end of the first. Vikings surrendered a quick goal early in the second period, and trailed 2-0. Winthrop cut the deficit in half midway through the second when Zach Deeb found the back of the net assisted by Dylan Driscoll and Charlie Page. The Vikings went 0-3 on the power play, which proved to be the difference.
