Lynn swimmers honored at banquet

SAUGUS – Mike Bruno of English and Brian Nelson of Classical were co-winners of the male swimmer of the year at the city swim banquet Thursday night while Classical’s Erinn Daly was the female winner.All three Lynn schools combined for the awards dinner at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus.Kim Garbarino, a Lynn Court probation officer who swam the English Channel in 2012 and just did a 24-hour marathon swim at the Marblehead YMCA last weekend, was the guest speaker. He told the swimmers that whatever they had a burning desire to do, they should not let anything get in the way.Classical’s coaches and captains were presented with the Lynn City Championship trophy and received a plaque and banner for winning the Northeastern Conference boys meet last month.Other citywide award winners at the dinner were: John Cahill Award: Eric Macorri (Classical) and Emma Trahant (English); Michael and Michelle Conlon Awards:captain Nicolette Angelli (English) and captain Brian Maldonado (Classical); Don McKenney Diving Award: Bobby Choquette (Classical).Classical award winners: student/athlete: Anthony Craig; most valuable: Allysha Dunnigan; most improved: Justin Rizzo; coaches: Paige Barnard, Cameron Marcinko; diving coaches award: Cody Dexter; spirit award: Briana Silva; boosters: Wallace Kiongo; Ram Award: Joshua Page, Ariel Banville; Monogram Award: Kevin Chasse, Alaina Girdley.Senior plaques went to Nelson, Janelle Way, Maldonado, Anthony Ong, Banville, Dexter, Stephanie Gaglini, Jennifer Moore, Luigui Genao, Lauren Hogan, Madeline Triosi and Wes Thomson.Classical also received a certificate for its MIAA Team Academic Excellence Award. NEC All-Star certificates went to Nelson, Daly, Dunnigan, Choquette and Simon Kazimierczyk.Letters went to Elias Bakas, Mehdi Bakhouch, Barnard, Jesus Contreras, Daly, Dexter, Gridley, Hogan, Kinogo, Macorri, Gabriela Marquez, Tyler Rabideau, Rizzo, Silva, and Triosi.Point bars went to Banville, Dhimo Bitri, Chasse, Choquette, Drew Daniels, Dunnigan, Stephanie Gaglini, Genao, Kazimierczyk, Maldonado, Marcinko, McCarthy, Moore, Craig Mordaunt, Nelson, Ong, Page and Way.English awards winner were: student/athletge: Nicole Kennedy; Red/Gray Award: Marina Broufas and Frances Serwicki, most valuable: Mike and Matt Bruno; most improved: Victoria Mercardo, coaches award: Danielle Carney and Jesse Freeman, diving coaches: Matt Demirs, Peter A. Sawin: Keri Bryson; Spirit: Robinson Arias Gonzalez; Boosters: Caitlin Geaney; Bulldog: Daria Fabrizio.Senior plaques went to Angelli, Arias-Gonzalez, Sara Barnard, Mike Bruno, Bryson, Demirs, Kennedy, Mercardo and Clarita Recinos.Captain bars went to Freeman, Serwicki, Matt Bruno and Danielle Carney.Tech also won an MIAA student excellence award.     Steve Krause is the Item’s writer-at-large. He joined paper in 1979 as a copy editor and later created a music column, called Midnight Ramblings, which ran through 1985. He is a member of the Harry Agganis Foundation Hall of Fame, a past winner of the Moynihan Lumber Scholar-Athlete Community Service Award, and was the 2012 recipient of the Jack Grinold Media Award for MasterSports, an organization that conducts high school and college coaches’ clinics.
