LYNN – A Boston man was sentenced to 1? years in jail after admitting to strangling and hitting a woman over the head with a liquor bottle at a hotel and then fleeing on foot across Route 1.”This is a very lenient pretrial disposition for someone, based on the defendant taking responsibility and admitting to the charges,” Lynn District Court Judge Ellen Flatley said Tuesday.Anderson DeBerry, 21, of 16 Mattapan St. #1, Mattapan, pleaded guilty Tuesday to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; assault and battery; threat to commit a crime; and resisting arrest.The plea came just before DeBerry was scheduled to go to trial on the charges and a charge of disorderly conduct, all stemming from a Nov. 24 incident at the Holiday Inn on Route 1.Police responded to the hotel on the report of an unwanted man in a room and learned the suspect was walking down the highway.Officers on foot and in cruisers pursued the man, later identified as DeBerry, who fled across the roadway upon seeing police but was arrested after a brief chase.At the hotel, the victim reported DeBerry became angry when he wasn’t allowed to bring another woman to the room, and he began choking the victim until she passed out. The victim awoke to find DeBerry punching her in the face and threatening to kill her. DeBerry also hit the victim over the head with a liquor bottle.Essex Assistant District Attorney Emily Mello recommended DeBerry receive 2? years in jail, with two years to be served and the balance suspended for three years. Bellavia recommended probation conditions of anger-management classes, a mental-health evaluation and treatment, no drugs or alcohol and 100 hours of community service. Public Defender Ilona Volker recommended a year in jail with 122 days credit for time served.Judge Ellen Flatley ordered 1? years in jail with 122 days credit. Volker noted DeBerry would be serving time for a case out of another court but did not specify the charges. DeBerry accepted the sentence.
