Roundup: St. Mary’s boys, girls lax open with wins

The St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team opened the season with a 14-12 win over Winthrop Friday at Manning Field.Freshmen sisters Katie Walker (4 goals) and Hannah Walker (3 goals) did some damage on the offensive end as did senior captain Amanda Donahoe (2 goals), Leenie Murphy (3 goals) and Maggie Flaherty (2 goals). Lauren Skinnion was solid on defense for the Spartans. Emma Harvey was in net for the win.St. Mary’s led by two at the half and then bumped the lead up to six with four unanswered goals to start the second half. The Spartans received a yellow card, which forced them to play down a body for two minutes. Winthrop battled back, scoring four goals to make things interesting down the stretch.St. Mary’s is 1-0 with Cardinal Spellman coming to town Monday (5).Marblehead 11, Woburn 6At Marblehead, the Magicians (1-0) hit the ground running led by Sydney Cayen, who scored five goals and generally got the job done all over the field. Amanda Gregory (2 goals, assist, GB); Andrienne Ciccone (3 goals); Lucy Poulin (2 goals, 2 assists, 5 GB); Abby Settlemeyer (2 GB); Corrine Mayle (goal, assist, 1 DC, 2 GB) and Kelsey Detels (goal, 4 DC, 3 GB) also contributed in the win. Kylie Cronin had four ground balls. Brittany Lydon (17 saves) picked up the win.?:It was a solid first game,” Marblehead coach Annie Pugh said. ” We came out and did all of the little things that we have been working on at practice.”Marblehead is at Manchester-Essex Monday.BOYS LACROSSESt. Mary’s 11, Greater Lowell 4At Manning Field, James Torosian scored three goals to lead the Spartans to a win in their opening game. St. Mary’s also got a lift from Steve Cronin, Rich Cadigan, Rick Calvani and Dante Maribito, who each scored two goals. Eighth grader Zach Mello (13 saves) was in net. Austin Frankel was impressive as well, winning eight of 11 face offs.The Spartans (1-0) are coming off a 4-11 season said. They play Cardinal Spellman in Brockton Monday.
