Roundup: English boys, girls track teams frustrated by Winthrop … and weather

Steve Krause

April 3, 2014 by Steve Krause

The weather pattern that brought us the polar vortex this winter claimed its first casualties Wednesday — the English boys and girls track teams. Both lost their season-opening meets to Winthrop, and both meets were close. However, both the boys and girls each lost 18 points because the sand pits for the long jump and triple jump were still partially frozen — victims of the incessantly cold winter — and, the officials ruled, unsuitable for competition. The 18 points represent nine each that, presumably, either team would have won had it swept both events. Since English was the home team, the Bulldogs suffered the disqualifications.Athletic director Gary Molea, however, said that he would try to appeal that ruling at today?s Northeastern Conference meeting. As recently as last week, temperatures in the Lynn area hovered around the freezing mark. The boys, who fell 73-63, had several winners, including one sweep. Peter Matu (2:13.9), Andy Thuon (2:19.8) and Fardin Islam (2:24.3) finished 1-2-3 in the 800.Ri Yan (11:38) and Emanuel Ezember (11:41) were one-two in the 2-mile; Tyler Comer took the mile (5:36) and Kevin Francisco the 400 (57.3). Also, Daekwon Shepard, Erick Rosario, Matu and Chris Lessard won the 4 x 100 (48.4).?My kids didn?t quit,” said coach Owen Wright. “They were all heart.”The girls lost, Winthrop 61, English 57. The Bulldogs got a win in the 4×100 relay from Georgette Cody, Princess Guwor, Briana Maynard and Faith Abdjune (55.5); and a victory from Kylie Moorehouse in the 100 hurdles (21.0).?We also got a lot of seconds and thirds,” said coach Brenda Martin.BOYS TRACKDanvers 88, Classical 48At Dr. Deering Stadium, winners for the Rams were Elias Gervacio in the 110 hurdles (19.6), A.J.
