SAUGUS – With the application approved by town boards, the only thing Saugus can do in the quest of a new high school is wait and hope. The statement of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority for a new high school was approved Thursday night in time for its April 11 deadline. Members of the Board of Selectmen and the School Committee read aloud the statement and its priorities before unanimously voting for their approval. The statement presented Saugus High School as “beyond its use of life,” having been built in the 1950s and intended to last only 50 years. It highlighted the school?s hazardous conditions, including asbestos in its structure, energy-wasting layout, its failure to meet disability standards, and the science labs that were behind the times.Town Manager Scott Crabtree commended the joint committee that has been working for months on the statement for their work in completing the report and written submission. Crabtree said the collaboration on the committee “unprecedented” with its partnership of the two boards, state Rep. Donald Wong, Town Meeting members, residents and school administration.Superintendent Michael Tempesta reported after the meeting that a digital copy would be submitted today to the MSBA, and the hard copy would be delivered next week. “We?re looking forward to hopefully getting accepted,” said Tempesta. The statement of interest was the second submitted of its kind for a new high school. The last application was denied by the MSBA last December.
