Revere CYO girls hoop wins New Englands

The Immaculate Conception CYO cadet girls basketball team put the finishing touches on a very successful season last weekend by winning the New England CYO championship at LaSalle Academy in Providence, R.I.The Revere parish?s seventh and eighth grade girls finished their regular season with a 14-0 record and when the final buzzer sounded, that mark had improved to 20-1. The team is coached by Timothy Spinney and Anthony Palermo.The final push began on Saturday when Immaculate Conception played Holy Apostle of Providence in the quarterfinals at St. Mary?s Bayview in Providence. The Revere team won, 46-34. From there it was on to the semifinals where Revere defeated St. Elizabeth Seton of Manchester, N.H., 47-32.The win propelled the team to the championship game on Sunday where it defeated St. Francis Xavier of Burlington, Vt., 44-27, for the New England title. Revere?s only loss came against Our Lady of Assumption in the North Shore championship, but Revere then defeated OLA in the state championship.Valentina Petic, a 6-foot center, led the team in scoring through the states and the New England tournament, averaging 19.8 points per game. Shooting guard Emily DiGiulio was good for 9.8 points per game and Tony Scearbo, 5.9 points per game. Alina Giuliano averaged 5.8 a game from the forward position and Marina Robinson and Jenna Wells shared the job at point guard.Revere had plenty of help coming off the bench including Emily Wykes, a forward; Gabriella Rotondo, a guard; Taylor Sujko and Jasmina Mujic, a 6-foot backup center.Pepic was the leading scorer in the state championship game with 19 points. DiGiulio had 13 points and Wells, seven. In the New England title game, Pepic had 20 points and DiGiulio, 10.
