Lacrosse: Swampscott boys open strong

The Swampscott High boys lacrosse team was firing on all cylinders in a 10-2 win over Revere Monday at Revere.On the offensive end, Alex Balleva (3 goals, 2 assists) and Jason Digman (3 goal, assist) did the bulk of the damage with Digman also doing an outstanding job on faceoffs, winning 10 of 15.”Jason Digman’s a difference maker,” Swampscott coach Todd Pierce said. “He’s won 76 percent of his faceoffs (in the first three games) … that’s a huge difference maker. We get to control the ball that much extra.”Griffin Hunt had a goal and six ground balls; Joe Silva had five ground balls and Tim Costin, four ground balls.The Patriots (0-2) had goals from Marco Mazzarelli and Jay Seigal. Mike Dreeszen had an excellent game on defense and Doug Zingali was solid in net. Swampscott led 4-1 at the half.Lynn 6, Winthrop 2At Winthrop, Shawn Hemenway had three goals as the Shamrocks evened their record at 2-2.Other Lynn goals game from Alex Amico (2) and Jack Stafford.Wes Thomson, Bubba Comeau and Danny Kane played well on defense.”It was a great team effort,” said Lynn coach Peter Pappagianopoulos, who added that Anthony Baio played well in net.Beverly 10, Danvers 5At Beverly, the Panthers (2-1) broke open a 3-3 halftime tie with a 4-1 third-period run to pull away from 1-1 Danvers.Hunter Spencer (4 goals, 3 assists) led the way for Beverly, with help from Nick Albano (2 goals, 4 assists), Matt page (4 goals, 1 assist) and Sam Abate (2 assists).Kevin Lally had 14 saves and Ryan Haggerty had six more.Whittier 11, Tech 0At Manning Field, the 0-2 Tigers got good goaltending from Ryan Lippert, despite the final score, coach Jay Richards said.”They didn’t give up,” said Richards. “They hustled. We just couldn’t score.”Richards also credited defensemen Anthony Sure, Billy Ferreras, Anthony Hernandez-Felix and Justin Taylor with playing well.Lexington 8, Marblehead 7At Marblehead, the Magicians (1-2) trailed 5-1 at the half, but went on a tear to eventually take a 7-6 lead.Lexington tied the game to send it into overtime and then won it with 14 seconds remaining.Ben Anderson (3 goals, assist); Dean Fader (2 goals, 2 assists) and Liam Gillis and Sam Paquette, one goal each, supplied the offense. Nathan Maselek (10 saves) was in net.Peabody 10, Gloucester 5At Peabody, Josh Fiore recorded a hat trick to go along with two assists for the Tanners.Peabody (1-1) got two goals and a helper from Bobby Caproni as well as a goal and two assists from Reed Foster.Matt Pino added a goal and an assist while junior Chris Cuervelus recorded his first varsity goal in the win.Austin Prep 11, Fenwick 9At Fenwick, the Crusaders came up short despite 7 goals from Kyle Russell and 20 saves from Nick Finan.Fenwick (1-3) got a goal apiece from Mark Nalesnik and Chris Napolitano, and will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday at St. Mary’s (7).GIRLS LACROSSEAustin Prep 13, Fenwick 11At Austin Prep, the Crusaders fell to 2-2.
