Saugus baseball sees bats stymied in loss to Triton

April 9, 2014 by Matt Fraser

MALDEN – A short memory can go a long way and the Saugus baseball team would be wise to adopt the mantra after its 12-0 setback against Triton on Tuesday evening at Malden Catholic. The Sachems never looked comfortable in a game that saw the Vikings score in all seven innings. The hosts? bats had no answer for Triton (1-0) starter Justin Cashman, who went the distance, allowing just three hits.?Obviously, we weren?t at our best tonight,” said Saugus coach Steve Freker. “We faced a good pitcher and didn?t do anything right.”The visitors grabbed solo runs in the first two innings against Joe Prince.Cashman scored from third on a balk with two outs in the opening frame before nine-hitter Nick Desrocher drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Jack Germanara, leading to Prince?s removal in favor of Joe Bertrand.A two-out, three-run double from Sean White in the third inning broke the game open just as Cashman hit his stride. The right-hander would strike out seven batters (12 total) over the next three frames.?He?s our unquestioned No. 1 starter and I expect this kind of performance from him in a season opener,” explained Triton coach Ryan McCarthy. “He got good defensive support and our bats really came alive, which was a bit surprising, to be honest.”The Vikings? balanced attack kept on the pressure with single runs in the fourth and fifth before a four-run sixth pushed the lead to double digits.Adam Chatterton made it 6-0 on an RBI single, scoring Spencer Norton before a triple from the latter plated Brad Whitman, who reached on Saugus? third error of the game (five total) earlier in the fifth. The aforementioned big sixth featured 4 hits, including back to back RBI singles from White and Desrocher. Both would score, the former after Whitman was hit by a pitch and the latter on a botched play at second.Five Sachems pitchers would toe the rubber before the game was out, a fact that Freker opted to view as a positive.?We got to see a bunch of different kids in action, which filled us in a bit as coaches,” said the longtime Malden Catholic skipper, who is in his first season at Saugus. An RBI single from Desrocher capped the scoring in the final frame. The hosts threatened Cashman in their first two trips to the plate, getting a man in scoring position in both innings. Saugus? lone hits came from Johnny Prentiss in the sixth, Kyle Autilio in the fourth and Dan Cacciola, who led off the first with a chopper up the middle.
