Tennis: Bahayez wins at first singles to secure Swampscott victory over Gloucester

Nazar Bahayez battled back from a loss in the first set to take his match at first singles and give the Swampscott boys tennis team the deciding point in a 3-2 win over Gloucester Wednesday at Swampscott.Bahayez lost the opening set, 3-6, but roared back to take the middle set, 6-0, against Gloucester?s Connor Adkins. The deciding set was a battle, but Bahayez prevailed.?It was a great match,” Swampscott coach Neil Whitehouse said. “The Adkins kid had Nazar figured out in the first set, but Nazar settled down and rolled through the second set. Then it became a battle.”The Big Blue (1-0) also had points from Ian Crimmins, who won 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, at second singles and Erick Eaton-Mike Pindrus, who won 6-3, 6-4 at second doubles.Peabody 5, English 0At English, the Tanners (2-0) had wins from Igor Chiste at first singles, 6-3, 6-2; Scott Perlman, second singles, 6-2, 6-3; Djordje Samardzic, third singles, 6-0, 6-0; Alex McDonough-Mike Nicoli, first doubles, and Steve Goggin-Sam Gottsegan, second doubles, 6-1, 6-1.St. John?s 5, Malden Catholic 0At St. John?s Prep, the Eagles (3-0) had wins from Dan Cunningham, 6-0, 6-1; Alec McNiff, 6-0, 6-0; Chase Davis, 6-0, 6-0; Sean Nork-Mateo Jacome 6-0, 6-0, at first doubles and Andrew Cardigan-Scott Reister, 6-0, 6-2, at second singles. The Prep is without its No. 2 singles player, Nico Limacher, who is injured. Lynnfield 4, Hamilton-Wenham 1At Hamilton, the Pioneers (2-0) swept singles. Winners for Lynnfield were: Luv Karia, first singles (7-6, 6-4); Joe Crowther, second singles (7-5, 4-6, 6-3); Mike Romano, third singles (7-5, 6-1); Will Durkee and Ethan Forrest, first doubles (3-6, 6-4, 10-7).GIRLS TENNISClassical 4, Revere 1At King?s Lynne, the Rams (1-1) picked up wins from Anna Athanasopoulos at second singles, 6-0, 6-1; Meridith MacDonal, third singles, 6-3, 6-1; Katrina Syrakos-Linda Khuth, first doubles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0; and Janelle Way-Shea Dunnigan, second doubles, 6-0, 6-2.Revere?s lone win came from Sara Grujic at first singles, 7-5, 6-2. Also playing well for the Patriots were Leila Darouey and Cassidy Hernandez at first doubles.Swampscott 3, Gloucester 2At Gloucester, both teams braved the elements and a couple of absences in their lineups due to illness. Swampscott had wins from Anna Raptunovich at first singles, 6-0, 6-0; Jessica Zolott, second singles, 6-2, 6-4, and in the deciding match, Anya Peterson-Sara Cunningham at first doubles, 7-5, 6-2.Lynnfield 5, Hamilton-Wenham 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (2-0) had wins from Sarah Mezini at first singles, 6-0, 6-3; Kelley Nevils, second singles, 6-1, 6-1; Izzy Figucia, third singles, 6-2, 6-3; Danielle Soden-Olivia Skelly, first doubles, 6-0, 6-2, and Sloan Colby-Nunziato-Logan Colby-Nunziato, second doubles, 6-0, 6-0.Peabody 4, English 1At Peabody, Kim Nguyen and Lily Vu accounted for the Bulldogs? (0-2) only win, taking their second doubles match, 6-4, 6-2. Molly Nhiv and Jasmin Chhim put up a fight at first singles before losing, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.Wellesley 4, Marblehead 1At Wellesley, the Magicians (0-1) opened with a quality non-league opponent and came up short. Amanda Gilberg and Megan Hanratty won their match at first doubles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Four of the five matches went three sets.Beverly 4, Salem 1At Beverly, the Panthers (2-0) lost in the No. 1 spot, but won the rest with Maddie Tremblay taking second singles, 6-4, 7-5; Caroline Joseph, third singles, 6-1, 6-0; Veronica Mun-Marion Flanagan, first doubles, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, and Carly Blau-Danielle Tetrault, second doubles, 6-3, 6-3.
