The Classical High softball team combined stellar pitching and defense with a robust day at the plate to shut down Marblehead, 4-0, Thursday at Grace Rogato Field.Junior Ivy Martin (4 hits, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks) stayed out of trouble most of the game with the only bump in the road coming in the fourth inning, when she had runners on second and third with no outs. Catcher Gabbie Kenniston helped save the day with a highlight-reel diving catch on a popup up the third base line. Martin got the next two batters to pop up to Franki Galeazzi at short to end the inning.?She pitched very well today,” Rams coach Chris Warren said. “She kept them off-balance.”Classical scored three runs in the third inning. Galeazzi reached on a slap single and advanced on a hit by Martin (2-for-3), setting the stage for Kenniston (2-for-2, 2 RBI, 1 run), who ripped a double to drive in Galeazzi. First baseman Jill Strileckis singled to bring in Martin and sophomore Ally Dunnigan singled to score Jess Perez, who was pinch-running for Kenniston. The Rams scored again in the fifth on a Kenniston RBI single that scored Galeazzi.Warren was encouraged by his team?s offensive performance (10-11 hits) against a pitcher (Michaela LeBlanc) the Rams have struggled against in the past. LeBlanc struck out three. He was also happy with the defense, including that of left fielder Jen Ierardi, who had five putouts. The Rams are 2-0.Marblehead had two players, Emily Messinger and Allison Kapoll, with two hits.Peabody 8, English 2At Peabody, the Bulldogs (1-2) couldn?t get the bats going against Peabody pitcher Shelbi Wilson, who allowed two hits, walked two and struck out 12.English scored its two runs in the sixth, with one coming off a Shanna Zeramby single and the other when Zeramby got herself in a rundown to allow Keri Bryson to score from third.Zeramby went the distance for English, striking out four, allowing six hits and walking five. Peabody (1-1) scored four runs in the third and four in the sixth. Kayla Santos went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Nicole Grafton, 1-for-4, RBI.Spellman 3, Fenwick 0At Brockton, the Crusaders could only muster four hits against Spellman pitcher Courtney Zambello, who struck out 16. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Spellman strung together a couple of hits and took advantage of an error to score all its runs.Gianna Pizzano had a hit and played well at third for the Crusaders (0-2). Charlotte Powers also had a hit.Revere 8, Salem 2At Mack Park, Revere pitcher Sabrina Palermo struck out 12 and allowed only five hits for the Patriots (3-0). Revere scored four runs in the first inning and added one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth. Left fielder Victoria Russo had a nice game, going 2-for-3 with a couple of stolen bases.Weston 12, Tech 0At Frey Park, the Tigers (0-2) had hits from Mariamny Jimenez and Sam Oliver (double). Yerania Castro had a walk and stole two bases and freshman Meagan LeBlanc was solid at shortstop.
