Baseball: English powers past Revere

Steve Krause

April 23, 2014 by Steve Krause

Things seem to be rounding into shape for Lynn English. One day after their victory over Classical, the Bulldogs got their second outstanding pitching performance — this time at Revere, in a 7-2 win.Andrew Napoleon had a no-hitter through five innings before ending up going six, giving up only two hits and striking out nine.?We have three very good pitchers,” coach Joe Caponigro said. “Michael Troy (who beat Classical Monday), Napoleon and Lucas Harris. They?re all pretty much the same type of pitchers. They throw strikes and keep the ball down. None of them are overpowering, but they have decent control. They?re all solid.”The win raises English?s record to 4-2 in a week where the Bulldogs will have ended up playing four games, provided none of them are rained out. They?re back in action today (10) at home against Danvers; and play again Friday against Swampscott.Offensively, leadoff hitter Kyle O?Connor was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs, and a stolen base. Harris was 2-for-3 with a run, a double, and an RBI.Mike Ausiello was on base three times, and knocked in one of his two runs on a safety squeeze; Brett Molea had an RBI single, and Anthony De La Cruz had a run-scoring double.?We had a clean game defensively,” Caponigro, “and that makes a whole world of difference. And we got some timely hits.”St. John?s 7, Fenwick 5At Bishop Fenwick, the Eagles (6-1) took a 3-0 lead but the Crusaders came back and by the end of the fifth inning, the game was tied at 5-5. St. John?s scored twice in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Nick Latham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the go-ahead run and Max Burt laid down a suicide squeeze, scoring pinch runner Ty Chaisson with an insurance run.The Prep went through four pitchers, beginning with starter Rich Riley (1 ? innings), Justin Kerhulas (1 ? innings); winning pitcher Frank Soucy and Evan Roberts, who got the save, facing four batters and striking out all four. The Crusaders had a big day from Nick Bona, who had three doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Eric Razney (2 singles, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases); Matt Townsend (2-for-3, walk, run scored) and Ted McNamara (single, 2 RBI) also helped out offensively.Rob Carillo (5 innings, 6 runs, 4 strikeouts) took the loss with Tom Parsons and James Dellisola going the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.Max Burt and Rosario Missipi each had two hits for The Prep. The Eagles have now won six in a row with St. Mary?s on tap today at Fraser Field.Swampscott 7, Northeast 4At Swampscott, the Big Blue cracked the win column with Cory Bleau going seven innings, allowing six hits, no earned runs and striking out four. Gavin Sullivan had the key hit of the day, a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning that gave Swampscott a 6-4 lead. Jake Cooper came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth to nail down the win. Matt Hubauer (2-for-4 with a single and a double) also contributed with the bat for the Big Blue (1-6).Lynnfield 5, Triton 1At Lynnfield, junior Greg Basilesco pitched a complete game, scattering five hits, striking out four and allowing no earned runs as the Pioneers raised their record to 6-1.Dan O?Leary knocked in two runs to lead the Pioneers on offense. Traverse Briana, Jake Rourke and Ryan Battaglia knocked in the others.?Greg was in command from start to finish,” said Lynnfield coach John O?Brien. “He threw a lot of strikes and made some big pitches.?We also played well on defense,” he said, “especially Jordan Roper at shortstop. Briana called an outstanding game.”
