Lynn salon offering cuts for a cause

LYNN – Salon 234 may be the smallest salon and spa participating in Boston Children’s Hospital’s HAIRraising Benefit, but it still hopes to make a big impact.”It’s all the Dellaria Salons on Newbury Street and my dinky store,” said Angela Mikedis, owner and operator of Salon 234, Hair Salon and Spa. “I’m nervous. That’s huge competition.”Mikedis is trying her scissors at participating in a cut-a-thon to raise money for Children’s Hospital. The competition she worries about is friendly because her daughter manages a Dellaria Salon, which is how she heard about the event, Mikedis said.”We always try to do something,” she said. “We’ve raised money for Susan G. Komen (cancer research) and Item Santa, but we wanted to attach to a hospital for this and how can you go wrong helping kids?”The event runs Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Haircuts will run $25 each, but all proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital, Mikedis said. She said she is also offering manicures and massages for the day, whereas most salons stick solely to just offering haircuts. Mikedis said she’s extended an invitation to a few local vendors as well in exchange for their promise to make a donation to the cause.”I have the Honor Society from Breed Middle School coming too,” Mikedis added. The students will provide face painting and temporary tattoos for kids who are waiting for their mothers to get their hair or nails done. There will also be raffles available where lucky winners could pick up a variety of hair care products or gift certificates for local restaurants.Mikedis praised her stylists for volunteering their time for the event, which she hopes will prove to be a long day. She also noted that the day is about getting hair cut not donating hair.”We’ve had some confusion,” she said.If a customer has eight or 10 inches of hair they need to donate and they want to cut it off, she will take care of that, but the event is more about paying for a good haircut and that money being donated to Children’s.”How can you go wrong?” Mikedis said. “You’ll feel good, you’ll look beautiful and it helps a charity.”
