Tennis: English girls register first victory

The English girls tennis team came out on top for the first time this season Friday afternoon against Winthrop 3-2 at English.”It did not come down to any single match at the end, but the match could have went either way,” English coach Lauren Mezzetti said. “It was very competitive throughout, but it was nice to come out on top. We really needed that win.”Winners for the Bulldogs (1-4) were: Ashley Lon, first singles (6-2, 6-2); Alison Tobin, second singles (6-3, 6-4); Kim Nguyen and Molly Nhiv, first doubles (6-3, 6-3). English plays Marblehead Monday.Marblehead 4, Peabody 1At Peabody, the Magicians had singles wins from Kelly Mealey, 6-3, 6-0, and Lily Frontero, 6-4, 6-0. In first doubles, Amanda Gilberg and Meagan Hanratty won 6-3, 6-4, and in second doubles, Alice Yufa-Hannah Cohen won 6-0, 6-0. Marblehead is 4-1.Malden 5, Revere 0At Malden, the Patriots had a strong showing in singles despite the results. Leading the way for Revere were: Sara Grujic, first singles (4-6, 4-6); Yesenia Mazo, second singles (3-6, 4-6) and Andrea Rueda, third singles (3-6, 5-7).Beverly 3, Danvers 2At Beverly, the match came down to first double and Beverly’s Veronica Mun and Caroline Joseph were up to the task, winning 6-6 (7-4), 7-5. Beverly also had wins from Sophie Claus in second singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Maddie Trembley at third single, 6-0, 6-4.BOYS TENNISDanvers 5, Classical 0At Classical, the Rams first doubles team of Alex Chea and David Hincapie had a strong performance against the Falcons first double team of Zach Norring and Emmett Pierro, (3-6, 3-6). The other Danvers (7-2) winners were: Nick Lisichenok, first singles (6-0, 6-3); Toma Nabokin, second singles (6-0, 6-1); Jim Cunningham, third singles, (6-0, 6-0); Dan Benson and Eric McKay, second doubles (6-1, 6-1). Danvers plays Salem Monday.Winthrop 4, English 1At Winthrop, the Bulldogs (2-4) picked up their win at second singles with Eddie Ayinla winning 6-4, 6-2.Marblehead 5, Peabody 0At Marblehead, Chris Wigglesworth won his match at first singles, 6-0, 6-1; Miles Barry took his match at second singels, 6-0, 6-0, and in third singles, Dimitri Vlassov blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0. In first doubles, juniors Griffin Butterfield and Michael Forte won 6-0, 6-4, thanks to some good serving and strong net play. In second doubles, Corey Stein and Garrett Tulley won 6-1, 6-0.
