The weather certainly could have been better, but English High baseball coach Joe Caponigro isn?t complaining after his team defeated Everett, 4-3, Wednesday on a walk-off single by Matt Desilets in the seventh inning at Fraser Field. The Bulldogs (7-3, 5-3 Northeastern Conference) spotted Everett a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but came back with two in the bottom half courtesy of a Joshue Perez two-run single to left field that scored Kyle O?Connor (double) and Anthony DelaCruz (walk).English bumped the lead up to 3-1 in the third inning thanks to some heads-up baserunning by pitcher Lucas Harris. Harris was off on the pitch on a grounder to second and when the ball was bobbled, he wheeled his way home. The run would be a big one. Everett scored two in the fifth on an RBI single and an RBI double to tie the game, 3-3.Mike Ausiello scorched a double over the left fielder?s head to get things going in the bottom of the seventh. Gene Castillo walked with one out and Desilets, who had come in the game as a defensive replacement in right field, hit a line drive to left field to drive in the winning run.Harris (3-1) picked up the win. He allowed seven hits, struck out four and didn?t walk anyone. He gave up three runs, two earned.Although Everett hung around a little longer than Caponigro would have liked, he was happy to see his team come up with timely hits at the end. He was also happy for Desilets, who came through in the clutch.Bishop Fenwick 4, Archbishop Williams 1At Bishop Fenwick, the Crusaders (5-5 overall, 5-4 for tournament purposes) put it all together to beat previously undefeated Archbishop Williams in a game coach Kevin Canty is hoping will be a big confidence booster.?The pitching was there. We had clean defense, timely hitting, ran the bases well and forced them to make mistakes,” Canty said. “I think we?re starting to turn the corner.”Rob Carillo (2-2) went the distance for Fenwick. He allowed only three hits, struck out eight and walked one.?For a cold day, he threw extremely hard,” Canty said. “It?s the best he?s looked all year.”Fenwick got two runs in the first inning when Eric Razney singled, stole second and third and scored on a Nick Bona sacrifice fly to right. Matt Townsend walked and ended up scoring on a Jhon Oliviera single.Fenwick made it 3-0 when Oliviera doubled and scored on a Will Vigneron groundout. Williams got one back in the fifth, but in the bottom of the inning, Oliviera reached on a bunt single and ended up scoring on a throwing error.Gloucester 5, Beverly 4At Beverly, the Panthers trailed 4-0 before battling back to tie the game with three runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Gloucester scored in the top of the 10th and held on for the win. David Drinkwater started for Beverly (5-6). He went five innings before giving way to Seamus Desmond and then Ted Leathersich, who had four strong innings in a losing effort. Craig Hall had three hits for the Panthers.Salem 11, Winthrop 8At Salem, the Vikings (4-7) came up short despite three hits and as many RBI from Matt Kirby. Salem?s Matt Marquez had three hits and two RBI and Sam Ramirez, who struck out eight in the win, had two RBI. Salem trailed 6-0 at one point.Revere 7, Marblehead 2At Revere, the Patriots (3-7) got a complete game win out of Noah Janes, who struck out four and allowed four hits. Mike Ciambelli had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4. Tommy Portrait (2-for-4), Kyle Norton (hit) and Jake DeAngelo (hit) also contributed. DeAngelo put down a suicide squeeze that actually brought in two runs because Portrait, who was on second, never stopped running.
