Despite rain, local teams manage to play

The St. Mary?s boys lacrosse team got away from its usual style of play on Wednesday evening and it cost the Spartans dearly in a 16-3 loss to Arlington Catholic at Manning Field.The Spartans, now 3-8, trailed 7-1 at halftime and never truly found their footing. “We didn?t play with the same kind of effort we have been lately,” explained coach Shawn Anderson. “When you play a great team like Arlington Catholic, you simply cannot make many mistakes. They made us pay and all we can do is give them the credit they deserve.”Steve Cronin scored twice for the hosts, who also got a solo tally from Rick Calvani and two helpers from Nick Amenta.St. Mary?s did well to stay out of the box, taking only four penalties, which pleased its coach.?If there was a silver lining, that was it,” he said. “However, we weren?t able to take advantage of our own power plays either.”Newburyport 14, Marblehead 12At Newburyport, the Magicians lost a close one despite strong showings from Harrison Young (5 goals, assist) and Dean Fader (4 goals).Marblehead (5-5) got single tallies from Charlie Thompson, Ben Anderson and Brad Knittle while Nathan Maselek made five saves in net.Fenwick 15, Matignon 6Scoring for Fenwick were: Chris Napolitano (5 goals, 4 assists); Mark Nalesnik (5 goals, 1 assist); Kyle Russell (1 goal, 5 assists), Jake Mitchell (2 goals), and Chris Carney and Tyler Fouhey (1 tally each). Nick Finan and Dylan Miata combined for nine saves. Fenwick (7-5) will travel across town on Saturday to face rival Peabody in the Danish Cup at 6:30 p.m.GIRLS LACROSSEBishop Fenwick 16, Matignon 3At Bishop Fenwick, Caroline Crawford and Merry Harrington each had three goals to lead the Crusaders (7-4). Annette Ruggiero, Tessa McLaughlin and Tori Hernandez had two goals apiece and Lexie Rose, Jackie Hart, Tegan Ahern and Alex Butler had single goals.Colleen Corcoran (7 saves) was in net.Arlington Cath. 20, St. Mary?s 9At Arlington, the Spartans received two goals apiece from the trio of Elizabeth Weisse, Amanda Donahoe and Maggie Flaherty.St. Mary?s (6-7) got 15 saves from Emma Harvey as well as solo tallies from Sophya Fuccione, Katie Walker and Hannah Walker.GIRLS TENNISSt. Mary?s 3, Matignon 2At Woburn Racket Club, the host Spartans evened their record at 5-5. St. Mary?s lost at first singles and doubles but prevailed behind wins from No. 2 singles Kelly Harrington (3-6, 6-4, 7-5), No. 3 Ana Bernardo (6-4, 7-5) and the tandem of Adelina Katzounos/Julie Shea (6-4, 6-2).BOYS TRACKPeabody 87, Salem 49At Peabody, the Tanners improved to 4-0 behind the winning efforts of Victor Teixeira, who took first in the 100 meters (11.2) and long jump (20-9). Peabody got first-place finishes from Rocco Cimino in the 400 meters (53.6), Pat Tuohy in the 400 hurdles (62.2), Erico Cordero in the mile (5:04) and Rich Fournier in the 2-mile (10:52). Moisse Irazzra won the high jump with a 5-9.The hosts? throwers excelled as well, with victories from Anthony Christo with the shot put (47-7), Ariel Ayala with the discus (120-8) and Manny Viera with the javelin (137-2).Salem had firsts from Jerry Canada, hurdles (15.3); Jon Crimble, 200 (22.8) and triple jump (39-4 1/2). The Witches are 2-2.GIRLS TRACKPeabody 112, Salem 24At Peabody, the Tanners were led by Cynthia Aroke, who took first in the 400 (62.8), 400 hurdles (66.8) and long jump (15-3). Peabody (4-1) got wins in the mile and 2-mile from Sam Allen (6:20) and Antonia Pagliuca (12:57), respectively, while Rayza Teixeira (13.8) claimed first in the 100 (13.8). Other Tanner victors included Lauren Barrett in the 800 (2:36), Sarah Hosman in the triple jump (31-3) and Katie Gallo with the shot put (31-5 1/2).Bishop Fenwick 69, Arlington Catholic 67At Bishop Fenwick on Tuesday, the Crusaders left Tuesday?s meet thinking they had lost to the Cougars by two points, but a scoring mistake that had Becky Woodcock finishing third in the long jump rather than second was discovered and the points were recalculated.
