College Notebook: Some bright spots with Salem State softball

The Salem State University softball team saw its season come to an end Friday with an 11-4 loss in extra innings to Framingham State in the opening round of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball championship at Salem.There were a few bright spots involving some local players. Cara Crowley of Lynn/Lynn English went 2-for-5 with three RBI including a double in the bottom of the second inning that scored two, with one of the runs come from Bobbie Dee Regan of Lynn/Lynn Classical , who had reached on a double.The Rams, who scored eight runs in the eighth inning to put the game away, had former Winthrop High pitcher Alex Feri on the mound. Feri (8-4) went all eight innings in the win. She allowed 12 hits, four earned runs, two walks and struck out six. Casey Fanning of East Boston/St. Mary’s had a productive afternoon for the Rams, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.The Vikings finish their season with a 17-21-1 record. Framingham will play Bridgewater State in the quarterfinals today.uSuffolk University softball players Erin McAndrews of Marblehead and Sarah Chasse of Salem were among four Rams receiving post-season recognition in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). McAndrews, a senior who played at St. Mary’s High School, was named GNAC first team. She set the Suffolk University single season record for hits in a season with 68 and she set a record with nine triples. She led the GNAC in most offensive categories. McAndrew’s career stats include 42 doubles, 21 triples, 123 RBI and 285 totals bases. She finished this season with a .486 batting average and her career with a .440 average.Chasse was a third team selection as a utility player. She started 21 games on the mound and appeared in 41 games. She hit .299 with 31 runs scored. On the mound, she pitched 139 1/3 innings, striking out 113.uGenevieve Benoit of Swampscott/St. Mary’s High, had a productive season as a member of the Salve Regina softball team. Benoit, a sophomore catch, hit .309 with five doubles, three triples and one home run. The team finished 20-16.
