Tennis: Classical girls get past English

The Rams’ Kayla O’Brien won 6-3, 6-4, at second singles over Alison Tobin and at third singles, Meredith MacDonald topped Cindy Truong , 6-0, 6-1. In first doubles, Katrina Syrakos-Linda Khuth defeated Kim Nguyen-Molly Nhiv, 6-0, 6-4, and in second doubles, Janelle Way-Shea Dunnigan topped Regina Ngaleu-Jasmin Chhim, 6-0, 6-2.”The kids look forward to it, (playing English),” Classical coach Cathy Ellis said. “I think there were some butterflies.”Lon won the first singles match 6-4, 6-1, over Anna Athanasopoulos. The Rams are 5-4.Lynnfield 4, Swampscott 1At Swampscott, the Pioneers (7-0) won 4-1, but a couple of the matches could have gone either way.”It’s been a great rivalry,” Lynnfield coach Craig Stone said. “We always expect solid tennis when we play Swampscott … we may see them in the tournament down the road and we know they have three-point potential.”Lynnfield’s Sara Mezini won at first singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2; Kelley Nevils, second singles, 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 (super tiebreaker); Danielle Soden-Olivia Skelly, first doubles, 6-1, 6-0, and Sloan Colby-Nunziato and Logan Colby-Nunziato, second doubles, 6-3, 6-2. Swampscott’s Vivien Gere won in third singles, 6-1, 6-0.St. Mary’s 3, Fenwick 2At St. Mary’s, the Spartans (6-6) dominated doubles, which proved to be the difference against the Crusaders. St. Mary’s Alyssa Graham-Annabelle Feliz took first doubles in a tight two-setter (7-5, 7-5) and Adelina Katzounos and Krysta Bertocci took second doubles comfortably (6-1, 6-2). Kelly Harrington was the lone individual winner for the Spartans at second singles (7-6,7-6).Manchester Essex 3, Marblehead 2At Manchester, the Magicians (6-2) swept at doubles. Amanda Gilberg-Hannah Cohen took first doubles 6-4, 6-3, and Alice Yufa-Sophia Cataldo took second doubles, 6-3, 6-0.. Marblehead plays Beverly Monday.BOYS TENNISSt. Mary’s 3, Fenwick 2At Bishop Fenwick, the Spartans (8-2) had wins from Brady Ryan at first singles, 6-0, 6-0; Patrick Morin-Plante, second singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Noah Camelo-Conor Foley at first doubles, 6-0, 2-6, 6-0. The Crusaders (3-6) won at second doubles with Aiden Barrett and Myles Tennigan, 6-0, 6-0. Manchester 3, Marblehead 2At Marblehead, it came down to the first doubles match that went three sets, but the Magicians fell just short. The first doubles team of Jason Frost and Justin Faia for Marblehead had a strong showing (2-6, 6-3, 0-6). Winners for Marblehead were Miles Barry, second singles (6-2, 7-5) and Griffin Butterfield, third singles (7-6, 7-5).
