Baseball: Swampscott stuns Peabody

The Swampscott baseball team picked up its biggest win of the season on Monday afternoon, defeating Northeastern Conference powerhouse Peabody, 5-2, at home.Freshman Gavin Sullivan silenced the Tanners? bats for the majority of his seven innings of work, which featured five strikeouts. The first-year upped his record to 2-3 with the victory.?Gavin is the ultimate competitor and he isn?t afraid of the big challenges,” said Big Blue coach Jason Calichman. “He was very composed and cool under pressure against a very good Peabody team. His line really speaks for itself.”Swampscott (4-9) took the lead in the fifth on an RBI double from Matt Habauer (3 for 3), scoring Ryan Cresta, who doubled earlier in the frame.The following inning saw the hosts take advantage of a pair of Matt Moorer walks to pad their lead. Brendan McDonald recorded an RBI single before an ensuing sacrifice fly from Cresta punctuated the frame.The Tanners got five innings out of Derek DeMild, who yielded three runs on six hits while striking out four and walking three. Peabody (10-3) has lost three of its last four after a 9-0 start.?We?re in a little bit of a slump right now,” said coach Mark Bettencourt. “We?re just not putting our hits together at the right time.”Mike Petrosino, Ryan Collins and Bobby Tramondozzi (walk) each recorded two hits in the loss.Gloucester 7, English 3At Gloucester, the Fishermen scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs got back into the hunt with three runs in the third. Lucas Harris had a bases-loaded double to score two and Drew Gentile knocked in one on a fielder?s choice, cutting the deficit to 5-3.That was as close as the Bulldogs would get. Mike Troy (5 innings, 6 runs, 3 earned runs, 1 strikeout, 2 walks) took the loss. English (7-5) is home against Salem Wednesday.Prep 3, Xaverian 0At Danvers, the Eagles got a complete-game gem from ace Evan Roberts (5-0), who allowed just one hit while striking out six. St. John?s (11-1) got RBI from Nick Latham and Max Burt in the third before the former added another in the fifth. Winners of 11 straight, the Eagles look to keep the streak going on Wednesday at home against Catholic Memorial (4).Marblehead 5, Salem 1At Marblehead, Jordan Chmara improved to 4-0 on the hill for the Magicians (5-7) after five strong innings (6 hits, 4 strikeouts) against the Witches. Andrew Raisner (4 strikeouts) faced the minimum in two innings of perfect relief.Kyle Maulden (2 stolen bases) recorded a pair of RBI singles for the hosts, who got run-scoring singles from Beau Dana and Garrett Keough as well. Tom Koopman singled and scored two runs for Marblehead.Arlington Cath. 4, Fenwick 2At Fenwick, the Crusaders? offense got going a little too late in a loss to the Cougars on ?Senior Day.? Trailing 4-0 entering the seventh, John Oliviera singled and stole second before scoring on a James Traversy double. The latter would score on a groundout from Rob Carillo, who took the loss on the bump (3 earned runs). Fenwick (6-6, 5-3) plays at Spellman Wednesday (3:30).Beverly 13, Northeast 4At Northeast, the Panthers cruised behind big offensive days from Matt Hamor (four hits) and Craig Hall (3 hits) who had three RBI apiece. Sean Munzing picked up the win on the mound to improve to 2-1.Revere 13, Winthrop 2At Winthrop, the Patriots (4-8) got good efforts from Mike Ciambelli (3 for 5) and Noah Jaymes (complete game, 0 bb, 4 hits, 8 K, win).
