The Salem State University baseball team came up short in the MASCAC tournament championship game, losing to Worcester State, 5-3, at Worcester Monday.Worcester came into the tournament the top seed, having won 13 of its last 15 games. Salem State was the No. 2 seed. With the loss, the Vikings are 29-15. They were ranked fourth in last week?s NCAA Division III New England regional poll. They won?t know until Sunday if they?ve been selected as an at-large team in the NCCA tournament.Worcester took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Salem State came back to take the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by junior Ryan Beliveau of Lynn. The hit scored freshman Alex Toomey of Beverly and Mike Davis of Peabody. Salem got another run in the fourth to go up 3-1, but Worcester would score four unanswered runs for the win.Sophomore Matt Burnham of Lynn (3-4) took the loss. He allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. He had two strikeouts and a walk. Worcester freshman Andrew Wells picked up the win with a seven-hit, three-strikeout performance.
