Peabody senior captain and pitcher David Apostolides baffled the Classical offense so much that he turned his brilliance into a no-hit performance Wednesday afternoon. Apostolides led the Tanners to an 8-0 victory at Peabody.?During warm-ups, David looked real confident,” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said. “We had lost three of our last four after starting 9-0. This is something we needed. A senior captain, who has paid his dues in our program, David went out and settled us down after a rough stretch as of late. David did a great job mixing up his pitches and keeping the Classical batters off-balance.”Apostolides threw 91 pitches in his no-hitter, struck out five, and walked two. Peabody led 3-0 through five innings. The Tanners produced a five-run sixth to pull away from the Rams. Leading the way for the Peabody offense was Ryan Collins (triple, RBI, 2 runs scored) and Sean McGrath (2 hits, RBI, run scored). Collins at shortstop and Christian Morales at second base turned in stellar defense. The Tanners (11-3) also clinched a spot in the state tournament.Apostolides joins a club of Tanner pitchers who have tossed no-hitters, a club that includes two of Bettencourt?s assistants: his father Manny (who also threw his against Classical) and Gary Linehan.Classical coach Mike Zukowski was very impressed by Apostolides.?He pitched a great game and that sums it up,” Zukowski said.Classical (6-6), looks to bounce back Thursday against Somerville.St. Mary?s 5, Matignon 1At Matignon, St. Mary?s starting pitcher Brendan O?Neill lost his shutout with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but picked up his second consecutive win (7 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts).
