Softball: Saugus edges Manchester-Essex

The Saugus softball team has lost some close games, but the ball bounced the Sachems? way Wednesday in a 3-2 win over Manchester-Essex at Saugus.The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Manchester-Essex put one on the board. Saugus took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Katie Sheehan doubled in Jackie Murphy (reached on an error) and scored on an RBI single by Pauline Ascolese.Manchester-Essex tied the game in the top of the seventh, but the Sachems had another comeback in them. Shannon Gayron reached on an infield hit and her pinch runner, Iliana Coreas, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mikayla Niles. Gayron advanced on a fielder?s choice and when a low ball for strike three bounced off the catcher and out of play, the winning run scored.?We?ve had so many close games. It?s nice to pull through, get a win,” Saugus coach Jessica Lucier said. “I?m happy for the girls. They stayed in it, fought back, kept their composure.”Gayron went four innings and Brook Westmoreland finished up in relief.St. Mary?s 17, Matignon 5At Breed, the Spartans (8-3) went on a mad hitting spree in the first inning, scoring 13 runs. Jennie Mucciarone had the hit of the game — a grand slam down the left field line that stayed in the park. Cassandra LaFauci went 3-for-4 with three RBI and the trio of Michaela Hamill, Jordan D?Orsi and Mia Nowicki combined for the win. Each went two innings.Peabody 11, Classical 1At Breed, the Tanners (7-3, 6-2) exacted a little revenge after losing to the Rams 16-3 the first time they met this season.Classical scored an unearned run in the first inning with Peabody coming back to tie it in the third. The Tanners started to pull away with three runs in the fifth inning and then put it away with five in the sixth.Ashley Jenkins (3-for-5); Ashley Ghostlaw (2-for-4, 3 RBI); Shelbi Wilson (2-for-5, RBI) and Dominique DelBene (2-for-4, RBI) led the 15-hit parade.?It was like a tale of two games. The first time we played them we scored a ton of runs. This time they scored a ton of runs,” Classical coach Chris Warren said.Jillian Strileckis was 2-for-3 for the Rams. Franki Galeazzi, who is heading to Salve Regina in the fall, was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Courtney Braswell was 1-for-2. Ivy Martin went six innings in the loss.Salem 15, English 8At English, the game was up for grabs heading into the fifth inning, but walks and errors did in the Bulldogs. Keri Bryson (3-for-4, 2 runs); Rachel Calnan (2-for-4); Shanna Zeramby (1-for-3, run scored) and Jill Bowden (hit) supplied the offense for English (1-12). Franny Dela Rosa (4 hits, 7 walks, 2 strikeouts, hit batter) went the distance in the loss.Lynnfield 5, N. Reading 4At North Reading, the Pioneers battled back a couple of times before taking the lead for good in the seventh inning on a two-run homer by Hannah Travers. North Reading led 3-1 going into the sixth. Lynnfield?s Jackie Whelan hit a shot down the left field line to drive in a run and make it 3-2 and Malia Roberto singled to drive in Anya Han, who had also singled, to tie the game at three.North Reading got one run back when a runner scored from third on a throw down to second. In the top of the seventh, Lauren Guerra doubled on a 1-2 count and Hannah Travers hit a blast to center field that skipped off the top of the fence for a two-run home run. Whalen got the win.Revere 11, Beverly 3At Revere, Sabrina Palermo fanned 13, but Beverly still managed to bang out nine hits. The Patriots (9-4, 7-3 NEC) took a 6-2 lead with five runs in the fifth inning. Juliana Ceceri had the big hit, a two-run home run over the fence. Revere also scored a run on a Noelle MacDonald squeeze and two more on Ally Hinojosa?s two run single. Lauren Hayes was 2-for 3 with a double and two RBI.Beverly?s Olivia George went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a single. Ally Pia went 2-for-4 with a triple and Jenn Cross, 1-for-1.
