LYNN – A judge ordered a city man held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing and also set $10,000 cash bail on the matter, after police responding to an alleged assault said the man’s wife described him as a “manipulative abuser.””(The defendant) would not let her leave the apartment, so (the alleged victim) said she asked him to leave because she was tired of the constant physical and emotional abuse,” Essex Assistant District Attorney Erin Bellavia said in Lynn District Court Wednesday. “The victim said he put her in a headlock, dragged her back into the apartment by the hair and bit her through her sweatshirt.”Carl Henri Bonicet, 26, of 9 Bellaire St. #1, was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery; and witness intimidation; at 5:37 a.m. Wednesday.He pleaded not guilty to the charges later that morning in Lynn District Court.Police responded to the apartment at 4:34 a.m. Wednesday and met with the alleged victim who invited officers inside to speak with her husband, according to a report by Lynn Police Officer Devon Dupuis. Officers found the man, Bonicet, hiding in a dark basement.Police said the alleged victim initially denied anything other than an argument had occurred.Then she allegedly overheard the defendant telling officers she had hit him.”(The alleged victim) broke down and began crying,” police reported. “She said she could not believe he would say that.”The alleged victim told police Bonicet was a “manipulative abuser” who controls her money and social life and has physically abused her. The alleged victim told officers she had packed a bag for Bonicet and told him to leave the apartment. He allegedly refused and refused to let her leave the apartment and contact police. The alleged victim said Bonicet then assaulted her when she tried to leave. Police reported the alleged victim said she was afraid of her husband but was worried about his application for citizenship if he was arrested, so she did not initially tell police about the assault.Officers reported a distinct bruise on the alleged victim’s arm where Bonicet allegedly bit her. Bonicet could not explain why he hid in the apartment when police arrived, officers said, and they arrested him.Bellavia requested Bonicet be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing to be continued until the Commonwealth could summons the alleged victim.Court-appointed defense attorney Mary Teczar said her client “vehemently denied” the allegations.Judge James Wexler found probable cause to hold the defendant without bail pending a dangerousness hearing and also ordered $10,000 cash bail in the matter, which he said could be argued at a later date.Bonicet is scheduled to return to court for the dangerousness hearing on Friday.
