Lacrosse: Swampscott holds on to win

The Swampscott boys lacrosse team found itself playing down a man a good chunk of the second half due to nine penalties, but still managed to fend off a talented Arlington Catholic team, winning 8-7 at Swampscott Thursday.?They?re one of the top ranked teams in Division 3,” Swampscott coach Todd Pierce said.Alex Balleza had three goals and a huge ground ball pickup in front of the net to score the eighth and as it turned out, the winning goal. The effort put Swampscott up by two with under four minutes left. The Cougars got one back, and the Big Blue got a penalty late in the game, which opened the door for Arlington Catholic to get off a good shot with about three seconds left that went wide.Jason Dignan scored two goals and won 13 of 16 faceoffs. Devin Conroy had two goals and Max Cohen made 16 saves. Jared Dignan caused three turnovers.Lynn 13, Tech 0At Manning Field, the Shamrocks (4-11) got a big game from Corey Wojewodzic (4 goals, 1 assist). Lynn got multiple point efforts from Alex Amico (2 goals) and Tony Uva (goal, assist); Anthony Baio made 5 saves. Lynn got solo tallies from Jack Stafford, Wes Thomson, Ryan McGrane, Adam Bryson and Sean Hemingway.Man-Essex 9, Fenwick 8At Bishop Fenwick, the Crusaders (9-9) fell in double overtime. Kyle Russell had four goals, Jack Mitchell, two goals, and Coleman Hebert and Kevin Hannon, one each. Goalie Nick Finan was busy with 20 saves.Lynnfield 11, Cambridge 8At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (7-9) were led by Chad Martin, who finished with three goals. The hosts got two tallies apiece from Johnny Knee (2 assists), Matt Boehner (2 assists), Dan Sullivan and Matt Forgione while Michael Look finished with 7 saves in the win.Marblehead 13, Masco 7At Marblehead, the hosts got five goals and an assist from Dean Fader as well as two goals apiece from Harrison Young and Brad Knittle. Marblehead (8-7) got solo tallies from Sam Paquette (assist), Ben Anderson, Brooks Tyrrell and Liam Gillis while goaltender Nathan Maselek finished with 8 saves.Saugus 11, Winthrop 4At Saugus, the Sachems (2-12) were led by Anthony Allan (three goals). Chris Sanderson added two goals for Saugus.GIRLS LACROSSESwampscott 8, N. Reading 8At Swampscott, the Big Blue (6-9-2) must win their final three games to reach the state tourney. MacKenzie Robertson and Erin Condon had two goals each and Elle Wright, Nianph Lang, Lauren Sullivan and Emma Sutherland, one goal each. Claire Powell made 12 saves.Peabody 13, Wakefield 12Peabody senior Courtney Hennigan (3 points) scored the game-winning goal with 22 seconds left on senior night. Seniors Courtney Smith and Aly Bortone had two goals each while senior Shantel Silva contributed one goal. Seniors Noelle Koch, Jillian Kerwin, and Courtney Cavanaugh played well. Peabody is 7-8-1.
