Roundup: Lynnfield girls tennis team clinches CAL Small title

The Lynnfield High girls tennis team captured the Cape Ann League Small title with a 5-0 win over Newburyport Monday at Lynnfield.This was the first time the Pioneers (15-0, 12-0) won the league since 2009, with Manchester the team to beat the last four years.?To finish undefeated is always impressive,” Lynnfield coach Craig Stone said. “We?re over the first hurdle. The tournament is the next one.”Sarah Mezini won at first singles, 6-0, 6-0; Danielle Soden, second singles, 6-0, 6-4; Marjorie Dwyer, third singles, 6-0, 6-0; Sloan Colby-Nunziato and Logan Colby-Nunziato, first doubles, 6-2, 6-3, and Camie Foley and Jen Caruso, second doubles, 6-1, 6-0.Swampscott 5,Winthrop 0At Swampscott, Swampscott snagged at least a share of the Northeastern Conference South title. The Big Blue (12-2) guaranteed that today?s showdown with Marblehead will be a big one with an outright title on the line for Swampscott and a share of the title at stake for the Magicians.Against Winthrop (the matches were pro sets), Anna Raptunovich won 8-0 in first singles; Veronica Pyatigorskaya, 8-0 in second singles. Freshman Chelsey Todtfeld, in her first-ever singles match, won 8-3 at third singles. Swampscott also had wins from Anya Peterson and Jessica Zolott at first doubles, 8-0, and Sara Cunningham-Michelle Shnayder.Marblehead 5, Winthrop 0At Marblehead, the Magicians swept past the Vikings to improve to 10-4. Marblehead got singles wins from Hannah Cohen (6-1, 6-1), Lily Frontero (6-0, 6-0) and Alice Yufa (6-0, 6-1). In doubles action, the hosts? tandems of Jenny Norcross-Sammi Gilberg (6-0, 6-1) and Mia Griffin-Caroline Hooper both cruised to victories. The Magicians play at Swampscott today (3:45).Peabody 4, Beverly 1At Beverly, the Tanners (11-2) swept singles with Rachael Gillis, first singles, winning 6-3, 6-0; Kayla Hodas, second singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Dany Chhan, third singles, 6-3, 6-0. Anna Grimalyak and Eleni Petronelis won at first doubles, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.Arl. Cath. 3, Fenwick 2At Bishop Fenwick, the Crusaders wrapped up their season with a 6-9 record. At first singles, English?s Joe Calman played well in a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Ryan Tran.
