LYNNFIELD – The Lynnfield Board of Selectmen has taken what is believed to be an unprecedented step and overturned a Town Meeting vote, allowing the MarketStreet Lynnfield shopping center its own public way.About 600 voters decided to deny Article 19, which would have made part of the shopping complex a public way so its developers could post signs on Route 128 North and South pointing to its location. But less than two weeks later, the selectmen overturned the vote 2-1 for what?s believed to be the first time in town history. Board of Selectmen Chairman David Nelson and Selectman Phil Crawford voted yes and Selectman Tom Terranova voted no.Town Meeting member Wallace McKenzie, who attended the meeting, said selectmen never told the 20 residents at the public hearing Monday what was in it for the town or why there was such a hurry.?They?ve decided to give National Development something for nothing – those signs on Route 128 and 95 will be marketing signs. We?re giving away free advertising. It doesn?t seem right,” said McKenzie. “To me, it was sign of disrespect to the 591-plus people who attended town meeting and voted against this.”Nelson could not be reached for comment on the vote.
