May 28, 2014 by Thor Jourgensen

LYNN – Former Mayor Edward J. Clancy Jr. is recovering his health in Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital almost two weeks after he collapsed outside the Lynn YMCA and was taken to Salem Hospital.North Shore Medical Center spokesman Kevin Ronningen said Clancy, 63, was transferred from Salem Hospital to Spaulding last Friday night. Spaulding spokesman Tim Sullivan on Tuesday confirmed Clancy?s admission to Spaulding – an extended care facility where people recover and regain strength and mobility following a hospitalization – but provided no details on the type of care Clancy is receiving at Spaulding.?There is nothing I can share or confirm,” he said.Clancy?s brother, Jim, and Clancy?s friends have declined to discuss Clancy?s hospitalization and health since May 16 when he was taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital from outside the YMCA on Neptune Boulevard.City Treasurer Richard Fortucci said he spoke to a friend who visited Clancy in Spaulding and said, “He seemed to be up and about – he seemed to be better.”Clancy?s attorney on Tuesday asked the Retirement Board to postpone a scheduled discussion on Clancy?s pension. Board Director Gary Brenner said Clancy “due to his health is not physically able to testify (at) or attend” a board meeting. The board?s next meeting is scheduled in June, and its five members had planned on Tuesday to discuss Clancy?s $6,600 a month pension and the possibility of reducing it in the wake of a March Superior Court mayoral pay ruling. The court decision stated the city could seek reimbursement for part of the tax dollar salary paid to Clancy in excess of the $82,500 a year Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy received since 2010.Clancy is appealing the decision.
