SAUGUS – A Lynn man was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail for allegedly driving without a license and on immigration charges following his arrest after being involved in an accident Monday in which a 3-year-old boy died.
Daniel Leal Ortega, 40, of Lynn, pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning in Lynn District Court to unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; after being treated and released from a local hospital for injuries sustained in the accident. He was also placed on an immigration detainer for alleged illegal re-entry into the United States.
Police responded at 10:37 p.m. Monday to the area of Walnut Street between Elm and Central streets and found two vehicles badly damaged, according to a press release from the department.
A gray 2005 Volvo was driven by a 43-year-old man from Lynn who refused medical treatment at the scene. But the passenger in the vehicle, a 3-year-old boy, had serious injuries. The child was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Ortega was driving the second vehicle, a white 1998 Ford Explorer, and police learned he had an outstanding warrant for driving without a license from Danvers in 2005.
The incident remains under investigation by Saugus Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section.
