Lynn summer school repair list spans city, totals $3M

LYNN – School repairs planned for this summer include fire safety improvements and work scheduled to take place in some of the city?s oldest public buildings.Eighteen of the city?s 26 public schools and the James McGuinness administration building on Bennett Street are scheduled for repairs as part of a $3 million fix-up plan. The City Council voted during the past month to set the money aside for repairs from a tax dollar surplus spending account.The spending includes updating fire alarm equipment in 21 schools and installing fire alarm panels in the 117-year-old Aborn School, Lynn Woods School and Pickering Middle School.Interior walls will be repaired in Breed Middle School and clocks and the school public address paging system will be upgraded. Breed also needs replacement of interior door locks, said city Inspectional Services Director Michael Donovan.Brickett School – built in 1911, a year before the Titanic sank – needs window repairs and the Callahan School is slated to receive a new fire alarm system and ceilings and hallway lighting.Donovan said city and school planners draw up a list annually of schools slated for summer repair work even as they map out bigger projects, including roof repairs and construction of a new Marshall Middle School.This summer?s repair list also includes boiler repairs in Classical High School where hot water tanks will also be replaced and a cooling tower will be rebuilt.Connery School needs an intrusion alarm system and a new gymnasium floor, according to a repair list prepared by Donovan, as well as parking lot paving.The 92-year-old Drewicz School needs new heating equipment and English High School is scheduled for classroom and office painting and hot water tank and pipe repairs and replacement work.Fallon School?s oil-burning boiler will be replaced with a gas-fired boiler and Ford School needs window repairs and continued floor replacement work, according to Donovan?s list.Harrington School also needs a new gym floor and slab work installed in crawl spaces. Hood School needs roof and window repairs and clock and paging system improvements.Lincoln-Thomson School?s parking lot is scheduled to be paved and Lynn Vocational Technical Institute needs ceiling tile and heating and ventilation equipment replaced.The Lynn Woods School parking lot will also be repaved this summer and a handicapped ramp will be constructed along with exterior stairway repairs. The Washington School is also slated for gymnasium work and the James McGuinness administration building needs window repairs, interior wall modification work and an intrusion alarm installed.
