LYNN – Harrington Elementary teacher Jacqueline Gallo and Aborn Elementary teacher Maureen Gallant were named Teachers of the Year by the Rotary Club of Lynn during its annual Service Above Self scholarship event. The purpose of the awards is to call attention to the importance of service to the community, which is an important goal of the club. The award also provides an opportunity to publicly applaud teachers and to reward those who have demonstrated excellence in their profession by “going the extra mile.”Nominees for the award included: Third grade teacher William Logue, from Connery Elementary; special education teacher Dave Romanowski, from the Ford School; Harrington Librarian Carole Shutzer; Callahan Elementary teacher Kim Staples; Lynn Woods teacher Donna Whelan; and Harrington Elementary teacher Elaine White, along with Gallo and Gallant. All the nominees received citations from the state House of Representatives and Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy as well as a $100 gift certificate. The two winners also received $1,000 cash awards as did their schools. The nominees were also lauded as amazing teachers, leaders, educators who go above and beyond, working outside the classroom, and people who come in early and stay late – they are “teacher’s teachers.”Nominees were solicited from all Lynn schools, public and private, and judged by Dr. Raymond Bastarache, Dr. Peter McGinn and Dr. Ann McGreevy. All the proceeds from the event benefit Lynn Rotary’s Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to Lynn high school seniors who are seeking higher education.
