LYNN ? A judge ordered $3,000 for a city man who allegedly fell asleep while running a bath for two toddlers who subsequently were rushed to the hospital with severe burns from scalding hot water.
Charles Collins-Robinson, 21, pleaded not guilty to two counts of Child Endangerment in connection with the bathtub scalding of two toddlers last Wednesday.
Police responded to an apartment at 263 Essex St. early in the morning last Wednesday and found two brothers, ages 3 and 2, were badly scalded by water in a bathtub.
Lynn District Fire Chief Stephen Archer said the younger child had burns over 50 percent of his body, and the 3-year-old had burns on 80 percent of his body, including the groin and upper torso. The children were taken by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital at 7:14 a.m. June 18, and then transferred to Shriners Hospital Boston.
Collins-Robinson was the children’s babysitter and first told police that he had left the children in the bathroom for only a few seconds while he went to use the bathroom in his own apartment across the hall,Essex Assistant District Attorney Aimee Conway told the court. The prosecutor said Collins contacted police the next day to change his statement. She said the defendant told police he had turned on the water in the tub and then lied down on a couch and fallen asleep, awaking to the children’s screams.
Conway requested $10,000 cash bail and that the defendant’s bail be revoked on an open case with charges of receiving a stolen vehicle, operating under the influence of liquor; and possession of drugs.
Defense Attorney Lance Sobelman said the incident was a terrible accident and requested personal recognizance for the new charges and that the bail not be revoked on the open case.
Lynn District Court Judge James Wexler ordered $3,000 cash bail and denied the motion to revoke the defendant’s bail.
