Saugus selectmen OK entertainment license for bar

SAUGUS – Saugus may have eliminated nightclubs from Route 1, but one establishment is still haunted by the impact the party scene had on the town.Sully C?s manager Elaine Byrne had a tough time modifying the sports bar?s entertainment license to include karaoke and a DJ at the Board of Selectmen meeting Tuesday. With Sully C?s occupying the same space as the former dance club Tabu, selectmen and residents worried about potential noise complaints.Town Meeting member Pamela Goodwin recalled the parking lot fights and excessive noise, and Frank Stanza said he used to receive “a lot of calls” from residents living in that neighborhood. Both asked the board to “protect the citizens” of Saugus and suggested restricting the hours for the entertainment license.Selectman Maureen Dever explained to Byrne that the pushback was related to the “long history of vivid memories” from disturbances caused by the nightclubs.?We don?t want to disturb anyone, we just want the ability to improve our place,” said Byrne. “We?re not Tabu, we?re just a sports bar.”Selectman Steve Castinetti said Sully C?s seemed to be “a victim of the previous applicant of that property,” referring to Tabu.?This isn?t the same type of business that occupied (that space) in the past,” said Castinetti. “We?ve never had a single call for Sully C?s.”Castinetti further disagreed with Selectman Debra Panetta?s suggestion for weekday entertainment hours to end at 10:30 p.m. “That?s ridiculously early,” said Castinetti.?There?s a lot more noise coming out of many other establishments.”The board compromised on an 11 p.m. weekday cut-off time for entertainment, with 12 p.m. on the weekends and nights preceding holidays.Byrne told the board that she may be back to ask for a later time in the future.
