The Lynn Babe Ruth 13-year-old all stars got off on the right foot with a 14-3 win over Swampscott/Nahant in their opening game of the District 1 tournament at Seaside Park in Marblehead.Lynn had a big night offensively from Christian Burt, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Dave Barnard went 2-for-4 with an RBI and James Wilkens reached base three times on two hits and a walk.The Lynn pitching trio of Burt (2 inning), Emil Rossi (2 innings) and Justin Rooney (1 inning) didn?t allow a hit in five innings, although they did walk nine to go with two strikeouts. Lynn had seven hits; all of them were singles.?It was a good way to start the tournament,” manager Leon Elwell said. “We were able to get everyone into the game. It was a good win.”Lynn continues pool play Saturday against Masconomet at 9 a.m. and Sunday against Saugus, also at 9 a.m. All the games are at Seaside Park.District 16 Little LeaguePeabody Western 5, Swampscott 1At Pine Hill, Joe Gilmartin was a game-changer for Peabody, striking out 14. He also hit a solo home run in the third inning as did teammate John Mulready. The back-to-back shots were all the offense Peabody would need, but Mulready decided a little insurance was warranted. He singled in a run in the fourth and Joe Castrichini wrapped up the show with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gilmartin also pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third.Swampscott scored its run in the top of the sixth inning when Anthony Rakauskas came home on a Dave Coleman hit.Peabody will play Lynn Shore Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. at Nahant. Swampscott will play Tuesday against the winner of Saugus American/Winthrop at MacArthur Park in Peabody (5:45).
