LYNN – Lynn District Fire Chief Steven Archer praised firefighters for knocking down a working fire in about 10 minutes at a multi-family Western Avenue home Thursday afternoon.Archer said a first-floor resident told firefighters that he was cooking in the kitchen at 366 Western Ave. when a grease fire got away from him. The resident, whom Archer wouldn?t name, was unable to extinguish the flames on his own. Archer said he appeared unharmed, but the man was transported to North Shore Medical Center for smoke inhalation.Others inside the home – two adults on the first floor, plus three kids and four more adults on the second and third floors – were not injured.American Red Cross volunteers responded to the scene to provide emergency shelter and funds for food for the occupants. The residents also received comfort kits and smoke packs, designed to help remove smoke and soot.Archer said upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire showing from the rear first-floor window.?The guys did a fantastic job getting it really quick,” said Archer. “They did a really good job attacking the fire.”Though the fire didn?t last long, Archer said it was necessary to rotate crews in Thursday?s heat, allowing firefighters ample time to hydrate and recuperate.Archer said there was heavy smoke damage throughout the building and some flame damage on the first and second floors. He was not able to estimate the cost of damage.
