LYNN – A Revere man is held without bail on a prior assault charge and held on $5,000 cash bail for allegedly punching an ex-girlfriend in the face for no apparent reason after she invited him over to celebrate his birthday.”The defendant has had seven restraining orders involving four different women, and four involve (the alleged victim),” Essex Assistant District Attorney Aimee Conway said in Lynn District Court Monday. “He has 27 different cases on his record involving charges of assault, assault and battery, or (restraining order) violations.”Manuel D. Alvarez, 46, of 20 Nahant Ave. #2, Revere, was arrested on a warrant for domestic assault and battery, no abuse-prevention order in effect; at 3:03 p.m. Thursday.A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf Monday at his arraignment in Lynn District Court.Police reported responding at approximately 3:40 a.m. June 21 to an Ashton Terrace home where EMTs were caring for a woman with a bump on her head. The woman’s daughter said the alleged victim had invited Alvarez over to the home because it was his birthday, Lynn Police Officer Pablo Figueroa reported. Alvarez arrived with his brother at about 9 p.m. the prior evening, and the two were drinking with the alleged victim in the apartment and then outside, the daughter allegedly told police. The daughter said she then heard her mom yelling and banging on the door to be let in because Alvarez had punched her, police reported.Alvarez’s brother confirmed the assault.”He then stated that he was not sure why his brother (the defendant) got upset, but recalls his brother punching (the alleged victim) in the face,” Figueroa reported. “He stated he asked his brother why he did that, but his brother left in a taxi moments later without saying anything.”The alleged victim reportedly told police Alvarez had beat her repeatedly during their relationship, and, at one point, she had to be hospitalized from the assaults. Police said the woman told officers she and Alvarez’s brother were outside smoking a cigarette when the attack occurred.”While they were outside Manuel D. Alvarez came outside and without saying a word he punched her in the face and she then hit the ground,” Figueroa reported the alleged victim as saying.Conway requested Alvarez be held on $10,000 cash bail and that his bail be revoked on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and threats in Chelsea District Court.Court-appointed defense attorney Amy Sixt said Alvarez was disabled and takes medication for mental-health issues. She requested a small cash bail, saying Alvarez successfully completed probation after a 2008 conviction, and the charges in Chelsea do not involve the same alleged victim.Judge Stephen Abany ordered $5,000 cash bail and revoked the bail on the Chelsea case, ordering Alvarez held without bail for 60 days.Alvarez is scheduled to return to court Aug. 6.
